I've been a game developer for 15 going on 16 years. I've used plenty of different engines, including Unity, Unreal, Clickteam Fusion, GameMaker, Construct, RPG Maker, you name it. NOTHING has ever gotten its hooks in me like Godot has.

There's this kind of indescribable feeling you get from making things work in this engine. It's not that they just work. Like all game development tools, it's gonna take some elbow grease to get things up and running. But the tools at your fingertips to get them working are just... unmatched.

GDScript is easy enough to learn in less than a weekend. The sheer number and variety of Nodes (Godot's equivalent to GameObjects or Extensions or Actors) is mind-boggling and the simplicity of accessing their functions through the code makes life worth living. Plus the DEPTH that some of these Nodes go into (cough AnimationPlayer cough) could make them their own software suites and YET there's so little tech bloat that you don't have to worry about the engine taking up more disk space than you can afford... or your builds not working on Steam Deck right out of the gate.

Honestly if you've been looking for an engine for your next project and haven't tried out Godot yet... just give it a shot. Things WILL click. And when they do, you won't look back.

I was using a tutorial to build a classic Shmup and it just stopped working, giving me errors despite the KidsCanCode (lmao) tutorial directions being followed exactly. I'm switching to Game Maker and if I come back, It's likely when I can develop an engine myself.
I really, really wanted to make something first to motivate myself to learn GDScript, but if i can't even do that because the engine has absolutely no group that regularly re-tests tutorials and fixes them and then locates them in a central location, then I genuinely have no reason to bother with it as a completely new developer with no significant prior experience in programming or anything related to game development aside from development document writing.

Really wanted to like you Godot, but until the New dev experience is improved, I just have no reason to stick with it. My plan is to go to Game Maker, if that won't work for me, then I'm going to Unity or anything that can natively use C++ as its internal scripting.
