I've been a game developer for 15 going on 16 years. I've used plenty of different engines, including Unity, Unreal, Clickteam Fusion, GameMaker, Construct, RPG Maker, you name it. NOTHING has ever gotten its hooks in me like Godot has.

There's this kind of indescribable feeling you get from making things work in this engine. It's not that they just work. Like all game development tools, it's gonna take some elbow grease to get things up and running. But the tools at your fingertips to get them working are just... unmatched.

GDScript is easy enough to learn in less than a weekend. The sheer number and variety of Nodes (Godot's equivalent to GameObjects or Extensions or Actors) is mind-boggling and the simplicity of accessing their functions through the code makes life worth living. Plus the DEPTH that some of these Nodes go into (cough AnimationPlayer cough) could make them their own software suites and YET there's so little tech bloat that you don't have to worry about the engine taking up more disk space than you can afford... or your builds not working on Steam Deck right out of the gate.

Honestly if you've been looking for an engine for your next project and haven't tried out Godot yet... just give it a shot. Things WILL click. And when they do, you won't look back.

When it works, it works great.

I'd recommend godot over Monogame, XNA or the other ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ royalty based engines that are subject to change.

However in godots current state, if you're working on a large project - There's still a lot of stagnating annoying issues that really hold the engine back which is why i'm giving a negative review.

Since godot 4 while there were a lot of fixes, there's still a lot of inconsistencies, I've noticed a lot of frustration with re-importing assets when tiles need to be changed or added to a pre-existing tileset, obviously this could be mitigated by adding a new tileset, but sometimes that's just not a feasible option.
When needing to reimport an asset it can inadvertently break the entire tileset and cause a broken dependencies, sometimes this can be fixed by deleting the .import file and allowing it to recompile the import file, other times you must remap the entire tileset.

When amending a large tileset, the rendering performance and slowdown as opposed to the tile map editor is horrible.

Another issue caused by physics interpolation is the pixel jitter, this is SLIGHTLY addressed by using scale mode as integer, and adding the following to your movement for rounding, but the issue still exists:

im not doing any games with this engine yet because i am currently engine hunting. but so far this engine was great! hope this has a 3d modelling built in? so i dont want to open blender and import something. i want a flexible engine that does anything. for example in 2d making game maker was the best because you can create your sprite on the go without opening any apps just that engine! how cool was that? PLEASE BE A ULTIMATE GAME TOOL THAT DOES ANYTHING!
