Can't pick up the shovel at the beginning of the game?

Is there some trick to picking up the shovel at the beginning of the game at the grave? I've left-clicked...double left-clicked...triple left-clicked...right clicked...double right-clicked...dragged...with each of my four characters. Nothing happens at all. Left-click works on other parts of the user interface.

Unsure I even want to start the game if there's some bug with picking up items.

...and I saved my game and exited after posting that. I fired it back up. Was able to loot the shovel just fine. Hope the rest of the game goes a bit smoother...
