Prison question - trying to free the pigs
I'm trying to free the farmers pigs in the prison area. Ultimately I want to complete the whole area non-violently so I've paid the tax and am avoiding killing any RSM people. But in the second area there are RSM troops between me and the farm and they are flagged as hostile.

Is there a way to get past without killing them? Failing that, if I do kill them will peace be impossible? I know from my first game that getting into a fight with the RSM now means they will kill off just about all the farmers after I'm finished at Damonta. Will killing this group not count?

Thought I'd tidy this section up for future readers.
1) I do not believe there is a way past without violence, and releasing the pigs WILL lead to more violence
2) You can always make peace AFTER Danforth kills off all the farmers, but not before
3) Danforth killing all the civilians is a scripted event regardless of your choices that happens as soon as you hook up the 2nd radio receiver in Damonta
4) It seems the civilians will die no matter what, even getting the robot track from Damonta and coming back to the prison before hooking up the 2nd radio receiver - as soon as you attack Danforth he calls in kill squads to happy valley who instantly kill all civilians
5) Even killing off the farmer who would have poisoned the dogs makes zero difference to the above

Disclaimer: this is all according to forums for the base game so *maybe* it changed in DC but I doubt it

Can't you kill the cause of the mass killing??? Or is it like in Canyon and someone will replace him to do the job?

I cleaned up all my ramblings to accuratly reflect all the forum posts I read through - I included the answer to your question which is; no, it made no difference in the base game

Ok it's no, but in spoiler tag or not, how the story explains it??? I mean the massacre, in case 5. For all other cases ok I see, but not this one.

I did some search and in case 5, the game just don't bother explain anything it's like Jobe did the poisoning before.

Ha well, one more story conclusion the designers wanted force onto player.

Haven't played the DC yet, but in the vanilla version you could go around the outside edge of the farm and use brute force on certain weak parts of the fence in a way that allows the pigs to escape without them being seen by the guards. Don't use explosives (brute force only)* and make sure the patroling guards aren't nearby when smashing parts of the fence. There are many weak points in the fence, but you must make sure to only break the right ones.

And IIRC, there are some land mines somewhere along the route the pigs will take to get home. You'll want to make sure you disarm those first.

EDIT:*Blunt weapons may work also.

I am currently in that area and it is possible to free the pigs without further violence. Of course, you need to clean the way till the farm. There you need to break the two doors in the east and then the backdoor of the pig stall. Don't break any other doors.

The pigs will run out unseen.

So does that mean Danforth will kill all the residents of the prison (other than RSM and allies) regardless of what I do? I seem to recall reading that he will only do this if you start a fight with the RSM in your initial visit.

Yup the secret to freeing the pigs is to carefully break holes in the fences surrounding the farm to make an escape route for the pigs to follow. Be careful not to knock down any fences that will cause the pigs to run past the guards.

Its a pretty easy puzzle once you figure out pig behavior. (i.e. they will run through any fence opening.)

He's scripted to kill everyone in the valley no matter what you do. There is no way to stop him.

Unknown if the Director's Cut changes this, but in the original he would kill everyone even if you never even stepped foot on the prison map until aftter Damonta. The death squads instantly teleport to the civilian locations and the civilians are kill() by the script.

So that's why there is that huge empty field leading nowhere in the back of the farm. I thought it was simply a useless enclosed area, but I assume the pigs disappear when they enter that field, right? I can't try it, unfortunately, as I just played that part of the game. Ah well, it is a cool fight against all those guards, and gives a lot of weapons and XP.
