is toaster repair a pointless skill?
I haven't gotten that far into the game but I've invested in it considerably (lvl 4), just wondering if it was a bad idea to have even started. the loot seems pretty meh, but i had the idea it would pay off later

It does eventually start being worth something. There are a couple of quests that can only be completed by opening toasters and some of the later loot can be pretty alright. Like most other skills, though, no need to spread it around, one ranger is enough.

most of the unique items come out from toaster

You may wanna just recruit Ralphy, he starts off with Toaster Repair skill.

IMO you recruit Ralphy ONLY for the toaster skill
His stats are so rubbish that he's not even good for progression.
Hes too dumb (Low int) to learn anything useful

There seem to be a few skills you can clearly live without. I am gonna try a playthrough without the Toaster skill for my mains and see how that goes.

if you roll INT 4 on all mains, you actually cant get all skills. And its eithe 4 or 10.
10 INT char is just useless in combat. But I agree, just get Rose and pump her with skills.

He starts out at lvl 5, so you have lots of liberty in shaping him however you wish. Like, for starters you can pump his INT to 4

Toaster repair gives items that give skill books if you bring them to the proper people.

as such its worth the investment in skill points. If you take the perk for the random chance to get bonus junk when repairing toasters you can also pull some nifty stuff out of toasters like weapon mods or high tier weapons earlier than you could get them otherwise.

Yeah regarding Ralphy he has 3 INT so yeah kick him to 4 int at level 10. he's got good initiative and lower AP pools, I normally give him sniper rifles. two points in weapon repair for tinkerer for the extra AP. he's not garbage. He's not godly, but he's useful enough.

you get the brawling skill book, the first aid skill book, the animal whisperer skill book, mechanical repair skill book, brute force skill book, barter skill book, weaponsmith skill book, perception skill book, as well as other things.

so... 8 skill books for investing in the toaster repair skill. there is a relic that weighs a good deal that increases toaster repair by like 2. so you only need to raise ralphy a couple points I guess if you wanted to use the relic when you get it. but thats tedious.

Toaster Repair alongside Outdoorsman is one of those skills... I don't really bother with. Definitely not on my core Rangers.

Alternative for Toasters is Ralphy, who you can find in Rail Nomads Camp. His stats leave a lot to be desired, but his 3 Intelligence can be bumped at level 10 to 4. His low starting level allows you to build him as you see fit. If you can get your hands on the Tool Kit trinket he is an amazing all around mechanic for your party.

End of the day, Toaster Repair is this niche skill, that you can use to unlock additional content, but is entirely for flavour and some additional exp and unique items.

I...

From what I remember of Ralphy is his stats are one point away from being optimized.

Liked he has ODD speed, odd INT, odd Coord. and takes him 30 levels to fix the issues. then 2 more points of SPD for the extra AP and initiative.

so he ends up with 4 coord, 8 speed, 4 INT, 4 STR. 4 awareness. He's perfectly fine. I mean he has 5 luck so he gets luck rolls which isnt super advised tactically sure if I was building a character personally I'd nix luck to 1 and just go with Awareness. (or fix speed first then go with awareness as I level up.

but he's not bad.

i wouldnt say its completely pointless. I wouldnt say any of the skills available are useless. maybe in comparison to other skills they might be. But in the grand spectrum of things i think every skill has its use. Even if its minor. There are some toasters you end up getting some pretty decent stuff from. And even some missions you need to have the skill at a certain level in order to complete them. Which really isnt all that many missions and im pretty positive all those missions are side quests any way. So id say its a good skill to have in its own way. But definitely only worth having one character who specializes in it. Not a skill you need a bunch of people to have. Id say rose is probably best suited to have a high level in this. Its what i would do and did personally. But not the only person you could do this with. Just that she has a decently high skill level in this area from the start so it would be easier to just level her up with it over another character. I usually never start any of my starting characters with it. Since i know im probably gonna just get rose to do the job. Unless i know i wont be saving the AG Center, then ill give one of my starting charachters that skill.

you really like to write wots

Its close to useless as there aren't many toasters though the toasters usually have something useful in them and quite often a unique item. for example in the prison map just before you get to the actual prison is a toaster containing hemorroids creme. Pretty weird item.
But then in the canyon of titan at the DBM base. with the right skill points in smart ass (i think) you can find out the that sadler the CO has hemorroids. And if you give him the creme he gives you a unique sniper rifle. Similar in stats to the m24.

Really thats the only i've seen so far. I'm not really sure why the devs seperated this skill from the mechanics skill. Why is toaster repair a unique skill?!?

btw the following guide will help change skill points if needed.

I read this article and noted that I assigned the skill points to the wrong char (one of my main chars who was a sniper/lockpicker). I'm planning to give them to rose instead because she's almost got skill points to throw away...
