Killed the Formens at the Farm
Need to go to Damonta, before I can get into the Prison.
Will they kill the farmers if go to Damonta, and come back?

It's not that GOING to Damonta triggers the events that lead to you being able to enter the Prison, NOR is it acquiring the "quest item" found in Damonta that grants you access to the Prison. Attaching the Repeater to the 2nd radio tower is what triggers the dog-poisoning and slaughter of the residents of Happy Valley. If you reclaim the "quest item" from Damonta but do not attach the 2nd Repeater in Damonta, if you return to Happy Valley and use that item... you still won't be able to get into the Prison. No matter how outfitted you are, no matter if you cheat and make your entire squad walking death machines, no matter what you do, you won't be able to enter the Prison until that 2nd Repeater is attached.

It's one of those tedious elements in the game that gets a lot of complaints, for obvious reasons. It's an event trigger that has nothing to do with what it activates, and there are ZERO workarounds to bypass it. Kinda kills the "I can do anything I want" approach of the RPG in this instance... =/

You CANNOT enter Damonta without visiting Happy Valley first (without cheating). You need upgraded rad suits to reach Damonta, and you need to speak to one NPC in Happy Valley to get those rad suits. You can enter Happy Valley, speak to the NPC, and not interact with or kill ANY RSM, however, but you'll still have entered Happy Valley, and Danforth will know.

If you enter Damonta then leave, nothing happens (except "time" passes as far as Damonta is concerned). If you do EVERYTHING in Damonta EXCEPT attach that 2nd Repeater, nothing happens outside of Damonta. As I said above, even taking the "quest item" found in Damonta back to Happy Valley will do nothing. You'll be able to fix a particular machine, but that machine will remain inoperable until the game event trigger is triggered, and that's done by attaching that 2nd Repeater.

On the other hand, you CAN enter Damonta, not do anything to help everyone there and JUST attach that 2nd Repeater, exit the town and leave everyone to die, and the slaughter of the innocent civilians in Happy Valley will still commence! Neat, huh? =D

Killing some RSM before going to Damonta is a hard temptation to resist. I mean, they're on their hands and knees begging to be killed, aren't they?
Basically you have 2 choices with Happy Valley: you either make a diplomatic decision which will have longer-lasting and more wide-reaching consequences for the rest of the Wasteland (in a good way); or you get justice for all the slain innocent civilians, and the only person who gets to realise that justice and do anything about it is Jobe, who is in no-small-part RESPONSIBLE to triggering that massacre. So either way, things won't be quite "right". Either the killed civilians are never avenged, except through the reformation of the RSM, or Jobe gets his farm back, and also gets away with precipitating a slaughter.

Or you can just kill everybody so you don't have to "worry" about the whole settlement ever again!

The people working the farm will just be gone when you return from Damonta. Jobe will remain though. Other civilians in the Happy Valley will all be killed, even if you didn't kill the Foremen. The only civilian who remains would be the boy who mourns the sick woman, if you killed her and convinced him it was the right thing to do. I think inXile just forgot to kill him too. Not sure if the all this would happen if you didn't kill any Red Skorpions in the valley or prison area though.

....I don't think I've ever heard of some one not killing them all, myself included.

Most people use the 'excuse' of "they were bad, I'm the good guys, I have guns so I killed them all like cattle".

But other than that, yes, Gillsing got it in one.

Last time I killed the Foremen because they were hostile and blocking my access to Jobe. This was when I returned from Damonta. At that time I had only killed the guards at the last checkpoint, since they were hostile and blocking my access to the farm, and the pigs I wanted to rescue.

I've heard of many players who talked about avoiding killing any RSM. But the prevailing wisdom was always "you'll need to kill them to get to the Prison before you leave Arizona, so why put it off, especially since you'll lose out on some quest exp if you do?" If there is ANY difference between not killing any RSM versus "the normal way", that would be interesting, but considering the number of alternate endings/options that were cut from the final release... I wouldn't hold my breath. This game is thorough, but it's not THAT thorough.

Not so sure about that. You have to kill some RSM to reach the farm, but if you choose not to, Danforth wouldn't be able to say that rangers poisoned his dogs when they were there killing people last time, since they wouldn't have been killing anyone last time. So it would be interesting to see how the game would handle someone not killing any RSM at all before getting the quest item from Damonta.

Do they all die anyway?
Is there no preventing it?
