Combat Damage calculation
How is actually the damage calculated especially the damage of the opponents?

I play in ranger mode and am often surprised how much damage even the simplest bandits or god milizia cause. An opponent's gunslinger with 3 shots on a 6 or 7 armor makes over 300 damage.

When I shoot back, espacially with pistols, the damage from the opposing armor is diminishing dramatically. And I got smashed with only critical hits with massive damage.

In the case of energy weapons, however, this is much more transparent. There the damage is understandable.

Any thoughts on this?

Ok.

So On normal Mode your gun does the listed damage. look at a grenade it does 100 damage, throw a grenade on ranger mode it does less damage than 100. i think its like 80 damage? maybe 75.

Thats your damage reduction for the difficulty, 25% less damage than listed. Enemies get a similiar damage boost on ranger difficulty.

If you look at enemies on the turn order menu it lists their armor. compare to your weapon penetration. Your damage will be reduced if your weapon penetration does not meet or exceed their armor rating.

Armor <= Penetration 100% damaage
Armor = Penetration +1 20% damage reduction
Armor = P+2 30%
A = P+3 40%
A = P+4 60%
A = P+5 80%
A >= P+6 100%

You can get the enemies weapon stats, it lists when they are moving for whatever reason. I'll probably grab a screenshot.

but their weapon stats are not your weapon stats. which is why their SMGs and shotguns don't suck ass.

Enemy armor is quite high and penetration is quite high that unless you go all in, its not worth bothering with anything past the bullet proof vest for the +1 AP of tinkerer.

you can reduce enemy armor with a torso shot.

Unsure where to find weapon penetration I seem to recall it showing up somewhere. lets just for now assume they have the same damage as your guns. they'll have a PEN of 6 so your armor isn't going to do all that much. 20% damage reduction.

take the weathered perk it procs all the time so I must have been getting crit alot.

Ah ok, this made sense... thank you very much for the explanation. Almost 70 hours in and try to find out how mechanics work. In the german Game Version Precision Shots show completely other Debuffs for sucess than in does after hitting the enemy. So torso shot shows with -30% accuracy but the real debuff is -1 Armor. Other Debuffs dont show anything at all.

But now I am quite a bit further. Thanks for that.

@ st0rmi: The -30% accuracy is stating that you have a -30% chance to hit because you are specifically targetting the enemy's torso. Similarly, the 0.80x damage means you will only be doing 80% of your normal weapon damage.

If you do hit the target, it applies a StatusEffect on them that reduces their armor. 60% of the time, that will be -1 armor. 35% of the time it'll be -2 armor. 5% of the time it'll be -4 armor.

oh ok thanks. I find it confusing too because sometimes I had 100% hitchance on precision Shots too, so I think this -30% cant be affectet my hit Chance from the Char. However No tool tip describes the effects of the precision shots and for some Debuffs there are no explanations about the duration or the negative effects on the enemy (for example leg shot)

Your base chance to hit might be over 100%, particularly if you have lots of weapon mods, so even with a 30% penalty you might still be able to reach 100% hit chance on the precision attack. It doesn't say it on the tooltip, but you get a bonus to your hit chance on precision shots equal to your weapon skill level, so if you have the weapon skill maxed out, that's an extra +10% to hit.

All the StatusEffects applied by precision shots are permanent, except for the rare (5% chance) legs one, which only lasts 1 turn. That's probably a bug.

Here's a list of all the precision shot effects:

HEAD
Common: none
Uncommon: 10% aiPsychoticChance
Rare: 100% aiPsychoticChance

TORSO
Common: -1 armor
Uncommon: -2 armor
Rare: -4 armor

ARMS
Common: -35% chance to hit
Uncommon: -50% chance to hit
Rare: -50% chance to hit, destroys their current weapon (reported to cause crashes if used on certain enemies like scorpitrons, likely because they don't have a Fists animation)

LEGS
Common: -0.6 combat speed
Uncommon: -0.9 combat speed
Rare: -1.0 combat speed, -3 action points

When a precision shot hits, a StatusEffect is applied, with a 60% chance of it being the Common one, 35% chance Uncommon, and 5% Rare.
All effects are permanent except for Rare Legs which lasts for 1 turn.
aiPsychoticChance makes a NPC ignore friendly status when evaluating potential targets.

I have like a 96% chance to hit with a burst with an assault rifle in cover toward the end of the game crouching would raise that to 106. so if they aren't in cover thats 156% chance to hit. so you could hit them in the head 89% of the time. I could swap out my long barrel for something with more accuracy but frankly I find the range bonus more useful.
