Who knows.

Personally, I don't think it will. It has some nice aspects to it, but the lack of a story and the lack of any kind of "where can you go to find some progress" indicators makes it difficult to view it as anything beyond "nice try",

And while it has happenend, I don't think that there are a lot of sequels for "nice try" games.

Even if Runic Games has left us some rather nice games to play (TorchLight 2 also comes to mind), alas it has closed its doors for a while now. So, tbh, I don't think that it'll (ever) happen.

Runic Games went out of business. They didn't even have the chance to properly finish this game, so a sequel most certainly isn't in the cards.

I can't believe they were tempted back to another new studio to make another failed torchlight. Holy hell greed induces people to do some crazy things.

We were lucky to even get Hob 1.

At the time, Runic had just been purchased by a Chinese company to do a Torchlight MMO. Only problem is the purchase turned off two of the Runic founders who left to form their own company...with two big guys gone, the remaining team decided not to do an MMO and went with something smaller in Hob.

Runic's entire history is about wanting to make an MMO, not being able to, and instead making some great single-player content instead.

I don't get it. This game did well. It has almost 3.5 thousand reviews. That means it may have sold around 4,000 on Steam alone. With console sales and everything tallied in, it might have hit around 10,000 or so. For an indie game, that's a moderate success. The game might have made around $100,000 or so if one were to estimate it. This game sold better than other indies that got sequels. The character, lore, and visuals here deserve a damn revisit.

This game was also released on the PS4 and Switch. It likely sold way more than 10,000 copies. However, the sales were apparently not enough to save Runic.

But why can't the same guys recreate the game under a different developer name? The fanbase is out there if it sold north of 10,000. For an indie game, that's pretty solid. For all we know, something else caused the sinking of the company and not this one game. The guys involved might have gone in separate directions (which some information has lead me to believe).

Then again, it takes time to make games also. They could be working on a sequel for all we know. Moreover, they could always test out a kickstarter and the fans could fund one. Anything is possible.

I don't get it. This game did well.

The company was broken up, part of it having to do with two of the founders leaving. Sometimes it's not always about the money. And, even then Runic Games has always wanted to do MMOs. It's a low priority.

We know what they're doing. The remainder of the guys who did Hob got together to create Echtra Games...they made Torchlight 3 which got some good hype and made cash. But even that likely isn't enough as they were acquired by Zynga this year and are likely just being combined into their team. Chances looking slim.

never, runic games went down.
echtra games may be made by some of the members of the original team, but just compare Torchlight 2 and 3/Frontiers. I hope it never happens, at this point.

Silly me, I didn't realize it got trashed that much. I guess that explains why they're not around. In the end, they always wanted an MMO and never got one.

T3 wasn't even made by Runic.

^T3 It was made by leftover employees from Runic Games, including Max Schaefer who was one of the Runic founders and with the same investor in Perfect World who bought a share of Runic before it went under. It's the same folks.

Yeah, yeah, the same way you can say that Torchlight 3 was made by Blizzard because he used to work there.
