How do you pet the animals?
No, really.

find an animal lying in the grass and when you see the "press X" just do it.

The easiest way is to pet one at the X/interact prompt before you get your sword. Once you have your sword, it is a matter of paying attention for the prompt while moving. I can't recall off the top of my head where it is, but there's a transition point with two turle-like animals where the prompt appears...sometimes. Ther's a laddr at one end of the area, and a gap in a hill(I think) at the other.

Yes. I've triple checked with the turtle snails, and the prompt appears. And, yes, it is easier to pet an animal before you get the sword, but that doesn't mean you can't pet one
after you get the sword.

Added: Because they are armored, you won't kill then if you hit X/interact before the prompt appears. That way, you just need to leave the area(they become understandably aggitated if they are "attacked", even by "accident") and return, rather than reload a save to have petable animals respawn.

Yes, the prompt appears when you are in proximity.

I grabbed some screenies to help anyone having difficulty with this, especially after they get the sword...

While there may be other areas with pettable animals, this is the only area I know where the spawn is consistent, and the animals are slow and friendly.

there's a hidden area where you can also pet the sprites!

So totally worth a little backtracking. The Sprite interaction happened two other times, but this one had a great scripted camera view. Being obsessive about going over places already visited paid off:

In 38 hours playtime though, I haven't had anything else apart from the duckdeer relax enough to be patted - not giving up yet though :D

Really that was it??
I already did that and didnt think anything of it as I thought it was just part of the game. I know that place, I was there, but cant remember where that was.

Have any of you tried walking slowly towards/around creatures, as to not startle them? I've only played with a controller (analogue input) so I'm not sure if there's a "walk" key for keyboards.

EDIT: You could also sheath your sword - I assume it might frighten (some) creatures.

The way to pet an animal is you have to wait till it has relaxed (often times theyll lay or sit down. the bunny things will droop their ears, etc.)
