He only had 2 skills unlocked, which were a cone of fire, and a frostbolt.
They do have a cooldown, thus he still had to fight in melee with his staff, but you could kite around for a while waiting for CD. Maybe at higher levels, you'll get enough spells not to have to wait for cooldowns, that, I wouldn't know.
However, there were monsters "immune to fire damage", for instance, so you probably can't focus only on one element, if that would even be a thing since all spells are in the same Odin's tree and you can max it out.
Unerde, your turn!
So I will catch up on that, thank you Teep ;)
First of all there are no limited classes as such, as said gods, and their connected playstyles.
If it comes to casters/mages, there is no specific magican or anything that purely focuses on ranged magic spells.
Nevertheless Odin is a nice example, as Odin has quite some abilities, such as the frost bolt or shockwave, you might have seen. Even though you are a Viking/Shielmaiden, so if it gets personal you can get into the fight with your staff. Best here, due to it's size it has some nice range, still giving the player some space, compared to e.g. Loki with his dual-wielded on-hand weapons, that require more contact ;)
If it comes to damage types, there are also quite some: ice, fire, poison, lightening and dark damage.
And for sure there are monsters that are immune to specific types of damage. So e.g. Fenvaits are immune to poison.
But not only Odin's gifts focus on damage-types, but actually all tech-trees will have abilities basing on a/some specific damage type/s.
Also items will have stats to either increase damage of a specific damage type, or if it comes to armour also building up resistance against specific damage types.
Here is an exampe of an axe, with additional Poison damage:

a green that adds poisen damage...isnt it a bit little for a green axe to just do so little? i mean its better then white and blue - but how is green better then blue if they carry the same 1-2 random stats`?
