Can I get to Hai space before completing the Free World Story Line?
Or do I just have to wait?

I know that the system is called Ultima Thule. But right now the systems where it supposedly is, are grey'd out, otherwise un-reachable. and I've traveled all the bordering systems up and down that area to buy all of the the 'local area maps', and those systems are still grey'd out. I've seen and read posts of people who have gotten to Hai space before completing the Free World story line, I'm just curious as to how.

What I know: I have to have a jump drive to get there. The 'wormhole' is in Ultima Thule.

How do I get a jump drive?
How do I get the map so that these grey'd out systems (north eastern area) show up and become reachable?

Thanks for reading folks!

The wormhole teleports you across the otherwise unconnected hyperspace connections. You don't need a jump drive, you just have to find Ultima Thule and land on the wormhole there.

You can get a jump drive either through the campaign or through disabling and boarding an alien ship on the occassion that one shows up in normal space.

Like a Quarg ship? Because they can disable most pirate ships effortlessly and are rarely alone in the middle of space.

Yes, or a Korath ship which would be significantly easier.

And how might a weary traveler find a Korath/Pug ship? Don't know how to access their systems.

You don't need a jump drive to get to hai space. If you start from Mirak (I think) in Syndicate space and go north, there's a path for normal hyperdrive travel. You'll need at least 700 fuel for that path. If you can still go into Republic space, the path from Betelgeuse you only need 500 fuel. Neither of these paths have pace ports between the starting system and Ultima Thule. You only need a jump drive to get to Korath/Pug space.

But if you want a jump drive just to make the journey to Hai space easier, hang around systems on the edge of Syndicate space closest to The Core. Korath ships jump in occasionally. I'd recommend going to one of the grey systems so merchant/Syndicate travelers don't blow up your loot.
