hauler is best option anyways, because with trading income scales in a linear way - shuttle is mostly for misisons, and missions pay the same, like 10-20-30k, but with hauling, more ships you have more money you make and pretty soon you make way more then a misiosn can earn you.
pro tip - mortgage yourself to the hilt and run first sol-sirius trade route (metal-luxury), then, with a scram drive and medium freighters with 6 fuel, sirius-alphard (equipment-metal). these trade routes, keep doing them, when your mortgage allows buy another ship, and keep buying them until you make several million per trip. Sirius-alphard is perfect for scram drive freighter because its a straight line, so ship does not have to adjust vector or velocity - its basically 4 jumps in like 4 seconds total trip time.
pro tip 2 - when you start with your hauling barge, sell off everything you can, just leave engine. shields, everything, sell it. use that cash to immidiatelly buy cargo expanders, and local map. when you are doing tutorial missions, dont just take guy where he tells you to, also check for trade and delivery missions to where he is going. if nothing, buy just goods to fill up your boat. so thats extra 300k by the time he asks you to drop him off at taliti. Local map tells you prices for goods at the dudes destination.
Anyhow once at taliti, and done with tutorial, you should have like 300-400k in the bank. go to sirius, run some clothing to sol, once your credit rating improves, borrow another 500k and buy another cargo ship. repeat until your eyes bleed (lol joking - until you have a fleet of like 10-12 starting barges). Dont worry about mortgage payments because sol-sirius is only 1 jump, so payments dont eat into your profits too much.
Anyhow at 10-12 barges, pirates start to appear, so time to upgrade to medium freighters with scram drive. sell all your ships and buy some medium freighters (buy on Luna in sol system), and start running sirius-alphard. Same deal with mediums - strip all gear but scram drive, sell generator, sell battery - you only need smallest and cheapest generator and tiniest battery - and fit up cargo expanders to the hilt. with mediums, you also need good engines - i reccomend atomic engines at alphard once you can afford. pirates cant catch you with scram drive on a straight-0line trade route so you dont need guns or shields. turn speed of 60-70 is fantastic.
10-12 mediums earn you like 1-2mil per trip when fully upgraded. at this point, you won the game pretty much - you never need more then 120mil to comfortably start rolling everything in your path. Run trade until your net worth is about 120mil, then sell freighters, and start doing whatever you want - combat, piracy, or campaign. You will not need cash again.
