Alien ship aquisition?
I imagine that the main way to get alien ships (if it's even possible; I mostly have stuck to human space so far) would be to disable and capture them?

Although that still begs the question as to how the pilot figured out how to use the ship.

Trial and Error. At least thats how Starbuck did it in BG Season 1. A better question to be is why there is no basic system security on these ships. Password lock at the least. But just go with it. I mean if you pick at anything you can find the paradox.

probably the same way you figure out which bathroom to use when you land on an alien planet.

If you know your way to Hai Space, you can purchase their moderately expensive ships.

You can purchase an alien ship from the Hai's, there's a wormhole between North and West, I would say it's 45 degree, it's also contested by non visitable systems, that your tip mate, good luck.

Korath Raiders are weak enough that a single, strong human warship can capture one. This may be the handiest way to get a bunch of jump drives for equipping a fleet.

I think I need to build up a fleet before taking any Quarg ships though. They seem to be pretty tough.

A password in a language humans don't understand would seem to be the simplest, most effective deterrent. Thanks to all, now I go forth to apply what i have learned.

Well, if you don't want to wait for story missions to give you a jump drive, you can hang around in the easternmost Syndicate systems, like Sheratan-- occasionally (rarely; you'll have to reload lots of times before you see one), a Raider will jump in (at least, they do for me; I'm not sure if they'll show up if you're earlier in the story). I suppose that, in theory, you could get a jump drive this way before the story gives you one.
