Of these three heavy freighters, which one reigns supreme, and why?

Best durability............................best cost effectiveness
Behemoth, bulk frieghter, hauler II
freighter has the best crew/cargo ratio

outside of these three, like what valentine said

Get the Shield Beatle, it's by far what I have unlock that's really powerful. It's a heavy warship, but it's worth getting man.

So let me get this straight...

Behemoth: most durable
Hauler II: most cost effective
Bulk Freighter: middle road

Unless:
you meant that the behemoth was BOTH the most durable AND cost effective, the bulk freighter was the SECOND most durable and cost effective, and the hauler II was the THIRD most durable + cost effective

finally,
REGULAR Freighter (category: light freighter): best crew/cargo ratio, thus most cost effective over all

unless.... by friegther you are refering to the bulk freighter

what I'm trying to get at in an inefficient and roundabout way is, could you plz clarify. Thanks m8s

I'm guessing the context of the question is for buying multiples of that ship to grind trading runs, so I'll answer in that context...

I've tested all three, as well as the freighter. My findings are based on custom models focused on maximizing cargo space.

I went from Freighter to Hauler II to Behemoth. I now have a fleet of 9 customized behemoths. I tested the Bulk Freighter as well, and it does end up giving a tiny bit more cargo space than the Behemoth, but I don't like it as much because it's a bit slower, and has nearly half the shields.

Freighters are the most cost-efficient, but since they're pretty cheap-small, once you have enough money to consider buying a few Behemoths, you'll have to buy a -lot- of Freighters to have equivalent cargo space.

With 20 Freighters, I found it a pain to have them all follow me and having to wait for them at my destination so they were all in the system when I landed, and it's more than can be listed on the left side of the screen where you see your ships, which resulted in some weirdness...

At that point, I switched to the Hauler II, which I got up to 395 cargo space (Freighters had something like 250, I forget exactly). I believe the Hauler II is the second most cost-efficient, after the Freighter, but 395 cargo wasn't enough for me soon enough, and I would have ended up with too many of them again, which is when I switched to the Behemoth.

EDIT: So I bought a Freighter, bulk Freighter and Hauler II and customized them, to see how they would compare with my Behemoths.

Notice there are two Hauler II variants. The second is the 395 cargo model I used, but I don't like that it's 3 outfit space away from getting another cargo hold. The first one has a bit more cargo, but lacks a scram drive.

Personally, I find the Scram Drive is better than a bit more cargo, but your mileage may vary. The problem with the Hauler II is that it has a base fuel count of 400, and you need 600 to get 4 jumps out of a scram drive. If you don't care about that (say you want to do the Sirius-Altair route), then you could get rid of the fuel pods and buy more cargo.

Alternatively, you can get ion thrusters instead of atomic thrusters and buy an extra cargo expansion on the scram drive variant, but then you go reaaally slow, so again... up to you if you want to do that.

Anyway, so these are my models. I'm not saying they're objectively the best, but this is what's worked for me.

Quick list by cargo space & total cost/ship value, without having to look at the pics:

FREIGHTER: 255 cargo, 1.229
HAULER II (hyper): 425 cargo, 3.420m
HAULER II (scram): 395 cargo, 3.440m
BULK FREIGHTER: 795 cargo, 10.820m
BEHEMOTH: 760 cargo, 9.370m

They still exist. You can buy them in Kraz and Zubeneshamali systems.

With scram drives, having almost no top speed means you can jump instantly. So go with the smallest main drive you can (turning matters to make course corrections, so keep those acceptable). The only transit time is docking at the final planet.

The most profitable routes are no more than three jumps, so you don't have to have more than 450 fuel (300 without the scram)

For just making cargo runs, shields aren't much use, as enemies can only attack your fleet when you are in the same system as that fleet. So get a superfast flagship (I use a bounder with maxed engines) with almost no cargo space and simply outrun your own fleet, wait around at the final destination until your green blips are just showing up, and land immediately. The fleet is never exposed to fire, and so needs no shields. You do, however, need to be a decent pilot.

Also, don't forget to factor in the crew cost, Hauler III has the best cargo/crew ratio of any. Coupled with it's low cost of 4.103m for the 495 cargo configuration, means you pay the least for your cargo space.

If you want to keep only one ship, Behemoth makes sense (though Bactrian, as usual, makes more sense for that particular scenario). Building a fleet, it's Hauler III all the way.

personally, i go for the bulk freighter solely for the low crew and massive cargo space. of course, i bring around 6. couple that with my 3 shield beetles as escorts and my flagship bactrian, and hualing cargo around becomes stupidly easy.

i think that the only use of higher priced ships is when you are buying a fighting ship, otherwise the lower costing ships are more cost efficient for cargo.
I just crunched the numbers, a skein carrying 6 boxwings gives you 600 tons of capacity for 8.395 million credits. You get the same amount of space as a bulk freighter from the syndicate for 2.521 million credits less, assuming you've got a militia carrier license.
