This is it.
I haven't done this myself, but I've read comments that it involves attacking or destroying a Bunrodea ship then landing on a human planet to trigger a mission.
actively attack or destroy is the only condition, then? I have seen my escorts disabled some of them by self defense, destroying some of them during fight against their hostile forces(because their disabled ships blocks the fire line) and I did steal some outfits from their disabled ships but I didn't actively attack or kill them and I don't have any missions after return to the human space. Must I attack by my own flagship?
I suggest that be honest, for I did so and nothing bad things happened. But... did you intentionally attack and destroy the civilian ships(the one without hostile by default) or only attack the 'elite guards'(who are hostile by default)? I am only did against latter, but only because they are attacked first and my escorts are responds. I did tried to not sink their ship, but after complete the mission and check the script, it doesn't matter much whatever I sunk their ships or not. But I didn't see the detailed text when I attack the civilian intentionally so I can't sure. But be honest, again.
At least you need to disable at least one ship in order to trigger the mission. The mission only checks if the reputation is dropped, and it seems that the game cannot check the numbers of ships we destroys. So only disable a single ship is actually enough, but at least that is required.
