Bounty-hunters and mercenaries missions?
Hello,

I have less than 6 hours of play and yet, I am supprised that there doesn't seems to be any kind of bounty-hunting/mercenary style missions. Usually in such kind of games, there are missions to destroy pirate ships/space-stations or bandits, at the very least. Or you can be rewarded for wiping out pirates and bandit ships, without any specific mission to do so.

In light of this a ship like the sparrow seems pretty useless, as it lacks a descent storage capacity. And the only missions that are close to mercenary ones are escort missions. But, most of the time, I just jump from system to system, waiting the transport to be ready to do so and not fighting much.

Am I missing something?

You have to prove yourself in combat before anybody will offer you cash for it. Press I on the main screen for your combat rating

You probably also want to upgrade to a bigger ship before doing much combat and then doing pirate hunting missions. A medium warship like a bastion should be sufficient for some early pirate hunting, anything much smaller will easily be shredded in a random fight.

i really only do bounty hunting in nothing smaller than a dreadnought (finish freeworlds questline for this.) it has a stupid high combat rating

The combat rating has nothing to do with your ship. It is computed from the total value of all ships you have defeated with this character. So once you have a certain rating it will never go down even if you fly around in an unarmed shuttle.

So the sparrow seems only useful as part of a fleet, as an escort ship, by the look of it.

pft, barely, the sparrow sucks, pretty much one missile takes it out, if you want an early game escort, go with something like a fury, or an argosy.

No the sparrow is not useful, it is just a very cheap starter ship that should be replaced as soon as you can afford it. Trading it in when you upgrade to your next ship is a much better use of it that any escort role it can fulfill.

So to summarize my understanding of the discussion.

1) The Sparrow is a useless pile of metal with an hyperdrive.
2) Bounty-hunting is only available when the players got a descent battleship and the reputation to be noticed by providers of such type of missions.

Regarding point 2, where is this explained? Browsing quickly the player's guide I didn't see such thing and I don't see it mentioned in-game.

From the offical FAQ:
How can I get escort / bounty hunting jobs? Your combat rating needs to be at a certain level to get these jobs. Every time you disable an enemy ship, your combat rating increases a little bit.

oh man, I ignored that so hard haha I try to learn as I go so I don;t get bored with another game every 5 minutes, only asking specific questions if I get really stumped. But for those who don't mind peeking, you can eve use Ctrl + F to find on page, even on Steam app
