Navy Carrier / Cruiser
I am new to this game (only 25 hours in) and have some questions about the Carrier and Cruiser.

I went through the starter quests which end up at Talita where you drop the old captain off at the retirement colony.

One jump away (to the east) is a shipyard on Castor which has the Carrier and Cruiser for sale.

Since I obviously didnt have the proper licenses to buy these, I started looing around in forums and google to try to find out more about these ships and the required licenses.

The only discussions I could find were all written in 2015, and at that time there was no way to get these other than boarding them.

Its now 2018 and Im wondering if anything has changed in 3 years.

Is there any quest to get the licenses, or any way to purchase these ships?

There is still no Navy storyline as of now. So the only way to get them is to capture them.
So far you can only capture them, but it will soon change

The Navy Storyline is being worked on by a few members of the modding community while MZ (dev) works on more alien story lines. Best way to obtain Navy-Like Ships such as the Carrier and Cruiser is to capture them, or you can edit your savefile to include the necessary Navy Licenses.

There's mention in one of the pinned threads, `don't necro and other stuff` or something I think, that the navy license is not yet obtainable.

You can obtain fev Navy ships without licence and anger of Navy - just play the Free worlds story line before go into war with Navy. Before this obtain a Bactrian to easy capture a Navy ships. Be carefull, after storyline ends do not land with Navy ships in Republic planets!

After several attempts I was finally able to work out how to add ALL the licenses to the game by altering one of my savegame files.

It wasn't apparent at first since those licenses dont show up on the screen (as the the pilot's license does), but I know I had them because the shipyard at Castor allowed me to buy the Carrier and use it.

In my opinion the Carrier was a completely underwhelming ship and NOT worth using for my prefered playstyle.

The Bactrian is a far better ship for roughly the same amount of money, has 5 times the cargo space, more crew space and double the turning speed... and requires only a Pilot's license LOL

Was slightly entertaining to try out the Carrier, but in the end I came to the conclusion that I will stick with the Bactrian, and keep it legit with no cheats.

Carriers and Cruisers are decent if you use fighters and drones to drive up your fleet's DPS, either for shorter fights or as pirate deterrant. They also make a great middle finger to the republic during the FW campaign. (Also, the Carrier is the only ship that can rock both (Stellar) class Korath engines.... Fast yo.)

It is also worth pointing out that currently, without a dedicated republic story, the best upgrade the navy gets atm is electron weaponry. Hopefully Kiko's republic story is adding some unique outfit options and additional ships that bring the navy up to par with the Free World campgain releases.

-no spoilers please kiko-

Ships yes outfits no. Deep have outfits for the republic.

Ships are also for the game in general, not just the repub story.

This will change next update. Right now, you can see the licenses you have by opening the info menu (i) and looking to the left side.

Turning speed is based on steering and mass, so the right setup will have a Carrier turning faster than a Bactrian. The Carrier is also a far better combat ship in general than the Bactrian, but does fall short in many other areas that a player might want from their flagship. Carriers might be better as escorts for you if you want to keep a Bactrian as your flagship.

and requires only a Pilot's license LOL
This will very likely change in the future.

Indeed... a game that I uninstalled years ago... literally

I had long forgotten this game and definitely don't remember ever posting this thread.
