ASCII Sector
There is a game entitled the ASCII Sector, which I have come across lately, website link HERE[www.asciisector.net]. It reminds me greatly of the Endless Sky when it comes to certain major gameplay aspects, albeit putting more emphasis on the role playing elements. It is also entirely in the ASCII visual frame. Latest update was on 22nd of Januray, 2016, the website tells. This makes me believe the project is on terminal hiatus. But are the Endless Sky and ASCII Sector anyhow related?

ASCII Sector is just a 2D/text version of the classic Wing Commander Privateer. So if you like it you'll love the actual original, which is still available on Good Old Games: https://www.gog.com/game/wing_commander_privateer

I have not played the original you mention, but the ASCII Sector is for free and actually, from what I have experienced, it is pretty detailed game.
