How do I check my reputation with factions?

I cant figure out how and I am trying to capture a heliarch punisher using the quarg escort strategy but I don't know when my reputation will be high enough.

You can't in-game. You can check your save file, though, there is a line "reputation with" and all governments are listed.

Is there an easy way to do this or am I in for a struggle with the bash terminal?

Reputations are listed new the top of save files which can be accessed with any text editor though some (like notepad) may not correctly format some of the blank spaces used.
Save file locations:
Linux: ~/.local/share/endless-sky/saves/
Windows: C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Roaming\endless-sky\saves\
Mac OS X: ~/Library/ApplicationSupport/endless-sky/saves/

Look for the `"reputation with"`. It should be line number 9 in the save file.

Note: the colours of the planets owned by a given government can give a ballpark figure for your reputation with that government as different shades of blue and red are used to indicate positive and negative reputations of different degrees. The exact bounds for each colour are unknown to me though.
