Apparent Bug in the Wanderer Mission String (possible spoilers), Release 0.9.4
Loving the game so far, but I've got an issue I can't quite wrap my head around. In the Alpha Surveillance Mission, I get these four nifty devices to place on four planets, and I have the option of pocketing the fourth and keeping it in my ship's hold. The problem is that both choices, while having different labels, yield the same outcome: I try to pull a fast one on the Wanderers by keeping the fourth surveillance thingy.

Really? It doesn't look like it.
choice ` (Use all of them for the mission, as instructed.)` ` (Steal one of the devices to keep for myself.)` goto steal ` You split the devices up into three groups to launch out your airlock in each of the three Unfettered systems. Hopefully the Unfettered will not notice what you are doing.` accept label steal apply set "stole a wanderer micro-sat" ` You split the devices up into three piles, one for each of the Unfettered systems, and keep one of them for yourself, well hidden in a safe place on your ship.` accept

If you choose to use them all:
` You split the devices up into three groups to launch out your airlock in each of the three Unfettered systems. Hopefully the Unfettered will not notice what you are doing.`

If you steal them:
set "stole a wanderer micro-sat" ` You split the devices up into three piles, one for each of the Unfettered systems, and keep one of them for yourself, well hidden in a safe place on your ship.`

As Derpy points out you do have a choice. And I will further expand on this by saying that the choice of what you do with the device will indeed have consequences.

Ah, never mind. This is what I get for staying up 'till 2AM playing this game. I had the unfettered confused with the wanderers.

The way I see it is that you get a big pile of cubes that come out to 3 equal piles, and each pile is a bit bigger than it needs to be for redundacy insurance. You have the option to either keep the redundant ones or send them out like you're supposed to.

Not the point here; it already says that in the previous paragraph.
It looks like Rek gave you extra, presumably so that you can deploy enough in each system to have redundancy if some of them fail. It probably wouldn't make a difference to the success of the mission if you kept one for yourself, and based on what Rek said this technology might be very valuable.

Anyway, I believe this issue is resolved?
