Reputation management? [spoilers]
So it seems that reputation is pretty key in this game, mainly to decide if you're friend or foe to any other ship. It also seems pretty trivial to tank your rep with a given faction, as you can just attack their ships—the notable exception being the AI controlled ships which seem to "forget" everything when you leave a zone.

However, how do you raise your rep with various factions? I assume those that for those that will offer you jobs, you can just complete them to raise rep, but what about those that won't? It seems that attacking who they hate is one way, but who is that for the various factions?

In particular, is there any way to raise your rep with the Quarg after attacking them? I looked at some older posts on this forum, and it seems at one time you were able to attack pirates, but that no longer helps. A newer post alluded to "rescuing" Quarg ships in the Kor Mereti / Kor Sestor areas, but how do you rescue an enemy ship? As far as I'm aware, whenever you board an enemy, you just see the loot & capture UI, and there's no way to repair them.

By [B]oarding ships. If ship is hostile you'll see a boarding panel, but if ships is friendly you'll repair it. Hostile ships can't be repaired.
Basically, go there while you're friendly with Quarg and repair them until your reputation is high enough so when you'll attack them and leave the system, they'll reset to friendly attitude.
This isn't an method to fix reputation with them. This is a tiny little exploit to raise your reputation high enough to not make Quarg your enemies permanently while trying to capture their ships.

There are three (repeatable) ways to raise your reputation with a government
1) Attack their enemies (does not apply to all governments and all enemies of governments)
2) Assist them; i.e. repair their disabled ships (only works if friendly with said government)
3) Assist the allies of a government (again, does not apply to all governments and all allies of governments)

For methods 1 and 3, here are the government breakdowns for allies and enemies that you are able to help or attack to raise your reputation with a government. Bewarb of spoilers below.
  • Free Worlds:
    • Allied With: Merchants, Militia, Neutral
    • Enemies With: Pirates
  • Hai
    • Allied With: None
    • Enemies With: Hai (Unfettered)
  • Merchants
    • Allied With: None
    • Enemies With: Pirates, Korath
  • Militia
    • Allied With: Merchants
    • Enemies With: Pirates
  • Republic and Navy (Oathkeepers)
    • Allied With: Merchants, Militia
    • Enemies With: Pirates
  • Neutral
    • Allied With: Merchants
    • Enemies With: Pirates
  • Pirates
    • Allied With: None
    • Enemies With: Merchants
  • Syndicate
    • Allied With: Merchants
    • Enemies With: Pirates, Korath
If I didn't list a government then the only way to raise your reputation with the government in question is to repair their ships. Otherwise, repairing ships of an allied government or attacking ships on an enemy government will raise your reputation for the above governments.

Note: attacking allies of a government will lower your reputation with that government as well. For example, attacking Merchants to make Pirates friendly with you will make the Syndicate, Republic, Militia, Neutral, and Free World governments all mad at you as well.

Ah, so this requires careful planning then, story-wise. For instance, once the Unfettered become friendly from the Wanderer story, if you attack them to make them enemies again, unless you grind out a lot of aiding their ships, it's impossible to get them back on your side again. Unless, of course, selling them Jump Drives gets you rep, assuming you can still do that.

Thanks for the list though, it's very helpful. I'm probably going to consolodate all of this into an outfits & ships guide, at some point (I think I've found almost all if not all of the items in the game), and with your permission I'd like to include the reputation info. I'll credit you guys, too, of course.
