Getting started? Starter ship, paying insurrence and other possible questions.
So I am ending up having to restart my save (wasn't too terribly far, but far enough that it will be a bit of a pain to start over) and this is due to that fact that I couldn't pay inssurence on time and I ended up not being able to keep a good amoun to cash and income for this save.

I started in a Interceptor (which i thought would be the best out of the three) and did the mission thing for the retired pilot. Then from there i did a mix of trading and missions. However I ended up getting a insurrence rate of 0.400% and I couldn't keep up with the needed payments and the amount they wanted.

So here's my questions.
What ship should I start with then? What should I do after first starting a save? Should I do the intro missions with the retired pilot? If not, then what? And should I do trading or missions?

Thanks!

I almost always start in the Shuttle and run jobs everywhere. The ones that have a lot of cargo/passengers and the ones that have a long distance between the planet and the destination tend to pay the most.

As a side note, I don't know that anything particularly bad happens if you don't pay your insurance mortgage on time, except that you can't get any other loans if you don't pay your mortgage.

Start with a shuttle. Do the missions from the retired pilot. Check the spaceport at the final planet you drop him off on. Check the spaceport whenever you land in general.
Stack multiple jobs in the same direction so you're always carrying as close to your shuttle's capacity as possible in order to maximise income.
Use the pay extra button in the bank to pay off larger parts of the mortgage although don't pay so much that you won't have enough to keep up with the daily payments until you get another chunk of credits from a job.

Star Barge best ship in my opinion, but some people prefer the Shuttle. The only real problem with paying your mortgage on time is that the payments will go higher and higher as they go unpaid for longer, which means you'll never be able to accrue large amounts of savings if they get too high. Also, if you don't pay off the mortgage by the time it has no time left on it, you will get no profit until the mortgage is paid for in full.

EDIT: Also, missing a payment because you spent too much paying off the mortgage isn't that much of an issue, since all that will happen is the total owed will go up by the amount you would have paid in payments, which will cause your payments to rise to where they would have been if you had spent just enough not to miss any.

If you take the Sparrow route, you can consider mining asteroids, which turns a good profit.

Sparrow route is tricker for first timers. I prefer shuttle to ,more fuel, still can haul a but plus able to carry passengers or troops(if you want to go that route). The star bargeis probably the most straight forward starter, buy low sell high. I really dont even like the sparrow route even if im going for the war path ill use a shuttlle.

Well, having enough space or crew, you could try to harvest disabled (pirate) ships or even capture them. Depends on your tactics of maybe luring them bit away from systemcenter, so the systemdefenseships disable them without destroying them. Many possibilities to get some cash.
In between you just could use one of the captured ships for yourself as upgrade, without spending any money but getting some in selling your old ship.

I did this in my last gamerestart, those small ships get you 100k-300k each, better than every cargorun if you have a nice spot to do so.

sparrow-mine asteroids
shuttle- passenger missions and small cargo missions (it can mine asteroids too but its very slow)

I recently tried something else. I use the star Barge and smuggle illegal cargo in the south. Works well because the militias have no scanners.
Edit: Requires a lot of bribing and going back to auto saves though...

It is typically very hard for new players to start off in the Sparrow, i myself being one of them. If you are committed to the Sparrow, I do believe there is a guide that should help you greatly. Anyone will to link it for me? Im typing on my phone

If your starting as a sparrow do mining. In the right system you can make up to 100k in mining per day. Copper roids (small copper/gold colored roids) when they drop gold (8.5k per ton), or Silver Roids worth 5k per ton (can be platnium drops worth a whopping 10k per ton). Special note, not only are these 2 roid types given the most unique coloring but they are also the smallest Minable roids.

You want to preferably farm Pt, Gold, or Silver. Otherwise, farm Tungsten, Titanium, Neodynium, or Copper. Uranium 238 is rare to find so you likely wont find it early on. Avoid mining Iron, silicon, lead, and Aluminum if you can.

Each system can have between 0-3 types of roids. Lead roids are the most common, with silver types being the rarest. Gold varients of Copper roids are also rare but worth checking if you spot one. All minables spin around the star clockwise. Straight line moving roids are to be ignored.

I haven't done anything in mining really, but I recomend star barge for beginners simply because it's reliable and pays off well. As long as you choose multiple jobs at the same destination, and make sure the distance isn't so far you lose money due to daily payments, you can quickly get enough credits to go in whatever path you choose (for me it's almost always the war path). Others may argue the shuttle path is better, but starting off trying to disable and capture ships is tough if new to the game.

Indeed, the combat path is hardest for someone who just started out.

Although most of my saves started in a star barge or a shuttle, i'd recommend getting a shuttle NOT for running jobs, but to capture ships.

How? First you might need to actually do some missions to stock up on cash to outfit your ship. Then you'll need to outfit your ship by removing unnecessary outfits (i think removing batteries for supercapacitors and removing the shield generators should be enough) and packing it full with bunk rooms, then filling it with rifles and grenades.

Then, hire crew until your ship is full, then head down southeast to the system southwest of Tarazed. This system (forgot the name) is usually packed with pirates, but also with civillians and militia. Now you need wait for pirates to be disabled from the constant fighting. Get to the edge of the system to avoid the meatgrind above the planet, and be prepared to evade pirates. If you are safe, spam B. If you are lucky, there might be a disabled pirate interceptor for you to board. Your ship will automatically move to board. Now you have another ship which you can sell!

I'd recommend this if you are bored of doing jobs, this method is way faster in getting money.

Protip: If properly outfitted, a Star Barge can have more bunks than a shuttle. With the maximum amount of bunks and a commensurate amount of laser rifles / frag grenades if possible, you can get pretty good capture chance with a small ship like that.
