Gameplay-wise, yes. It is nothing more than invisible beams.

Lore-wise, it can probably be explained by the idea of the Pug being masters of spacetime. The weapon rips the very fabric of space apart, similar to how the Quarg described the Pug's capabilities.
Another interpretation involves some thinking about the name. "Gridfire." You figuratively set a grid (the fabric of the universe) on fire. (Its red appearance kind of supports that.)

On an unrelated note, "Gridfire" by itself is a pretty badass name. We could potentially use it to name some kind of cataclysmic event, like Ragnarok or Armageddon.

Grid of the universe's fabric? Hmmm...
Makes one think that the Pug might just be the programmers of a holographic universe. Much like the Matrix story and the theory that we are all just sprites in someones (very) detailed simulation.
Would explain much.
Just sayin'...

Wait, so Michael = the Pug?!

Not implausible, given that they are sort of a hive mind and such (according to the Quarg), but...

And then the main character is literally just one of the guys in Michael's higher dimensional space playing a videogame...

And then...

...

Oh, ♥♥♥♥...

There's also that one post-FW event where you meet two of the FW leaders (forgot which) and you end up breaking the fourth wall...

I reakon thet "Gridfire" has come from Iain M Banks' Culture novels, Excession in perticuler where it is used to destroy a culture ringworld. There it is described as the energy grid (that seporates uneverses and pervides motive power to spaceships) being pushed "up" untill it reaches real space. Ther effect this would previde is more or less that of having a ball of energy appear in space with little or no apparent atachment to anything.
