Lords of Magic: Special Edition

Minor Artifact Exploit
Hi all,

There's a nifty artifact trick I thought I should mention since I don't see anyone else talking about it. It's something I learned way back in the day when I used to play this game as a kid. (I'm so glad this is up on Steam; I played the heck out of this game back in the day!)

If you create a custom starting party, add an artifact into your "Artifacts Purchased" bar up at the top of the screen. Then move that artifact down into your Lord's inventory and right-click it to cancel the purchase.

After you do that, go about your normal set up and when you load into the game you will have everything else you bought, but you will also have the artifact that you selected.

I'm not sure if this still works with any mods folks are using, but it does work with the basic game. I like this trick since it's a fun way to play at the hard difficulty, but with a somewhat stronger starting party.

Hope it helps!

You can also use that trick to refund the item to get more points at creation. Then buy legendary items.

Bingo.

Move the item to your lord, to the artifact bar, and right click it to remove it. Save the file and load it, and you'll have the bonus points for selling it plus having the artifact back.

Rinse and repeat for the desired starting army.

You don't even need to save and load.

Buy the most expensive artifact you can afford (note you can de-level your Lord to get more points for this). Go to the artifact bar at the top and LEFT-click and drag the artifact back to the bottom. Then mouse over the artifact bar and you will see an invisible ghost version of the artifact there. RIGHT-click on the invisible artifact and you just refunded it twice.

You know, all those years I never bothered to see if I could drag and drop where the floating text stayed. I always assumed it was just a visual glitch of data not being cleared.

I don't know if it was only in Mantera, But there was a bug, where if you bought the most expensive artifact you could afford, then the cheapest, you could sell the most expensive for its inflated price, then sell the cheap one for its normal price. I think they fixed that, if it did apply.

Correction: A variant of the glitch still works. It however requires 9,999 plus enough for a scout of your faith or more. This works for both units and artifacts, but both have to be the same category (creature with creature or artifact with artifact).
You buy the most expensive (Actually, least expensive non 0, but still has a number assigned, may work better) unit or artifact you can that doesn't cost 9999 and leaves 9999+ left.
Then buy a correlating unit or artifact that costs 9999.
Then sell them first purchase first.
This works because the highest price is 9999, and so it will not raise that price. Remember, all that don't already cost 9999 increase relative to the number of artifacts or units you have.
All units and artifacts of the Opposing Faith I suspect are always 9999.
