Mantera's mods are the closest you are going to get to a sequel right now.
Imho it should be some kind of turnbased Grandstrategy and Pen&Paper-Like-RPG mix.
That said, of course I would love a LoM2 on the level of AoW3.
An updated UI / AI LoM with TBS overmap + real time battles (which are more exciting than the minutes-long march / slog that is the total war series) would be really fun.
Sadly, I doubt it'll happen, but one can hope, since so many other classic series have been getting a refresh.
The Dominions series is moving into real time combat with Dominions 5, making it somewhat similar, however Dominions is a very complex game by comparison, and is much more spell focused, with absolutely massive spell lists. It's an expensive game, so I might recommend waiting for Dominions 5 unless Dominions 4 goes on sale, so you don't buy the same game twice.
If you want a more linear, RPG like game, I'd go for Conquest of Elysium, which is made by the same group that made Dominions. It's very hit or miss though. It's got a cool feature where you can go to other realms including elemental planes, but there is little reason to do so right now and the feature currently feels like it's simply an idea to be fleshed out in the next game in the series.
Probably the most similar games are the ones inspired by Master of Magic. Age of Wonders is a notable example. Combat isn't real time, but otherwise it's similar in that you have different schools of magic, races and slight 4X leanings. There are other Master of Magic inspired games, but Age of Wonders is the most well known, and possibly the most similar to this game.
A more 4X type game would be Fallen Enchantress. Sorceror King Rivals is probably even closer due to having a singular powerful kingdom with a tyrant as a villain, but it's not as good in the opinions of many. Both games have fairly strong RPG mechanics.
If the real time combat with pause was your thing. Total War: Warhammer might be the game for you. I personally really enjoy it, but it doesn't feel very similar.
Disciples 2 fills a similar sort of niche as LoMSE for me.
@cutie $20 would be the price of a remaster maybe. If it was a legitimate full production sequel I would expect $40-60
