Voice of El: What does the Pilgrim do?

I Was playing voice of El and had a pilgrim spawn. It moved on its own and had no particular abilities. It seemed to keep heading in one direction and then got killed by some boars. Has anyone kept the pilgrim alive? Does it do anything?

I'm guessing the Pilgrim converts neutral and enemy cities whch he randomly moves into...? So you get the 1/3rd income from them.

I can confirm, I played a game as demonologist and he somehow got into a cluster of my villages. I couldn't catch him for a few turns and he converted all the cities.
