You will probably have to start from the beginning of that mission. You can load the mission save which gets created at the start of every mission and cannot be deleted (while in the game).
I dont remember if those get overwritten when quicksaving or whatever but at least the start of the mission is the worst he has to go back to.
If he is not using manual saves then that is going to hurt him as just using quicksaves alone wont help cos you will be constantly overwriting saves and if you screw up somewhere you wont have a proper backup.
There is no autosave for that station area, which seems kind of strange, and my quicksave was obviously written over while I was on the wrong side of the chasm. And yes, my permanent saves were all made while I was on the wrong side, too. I'll be more careful from now on. I just assumed from the quality of the game overall I wouldn't be able to break it this way.
Thanks for the replies! I'll just have to play the station section over again.
Found a video on it look at 3:28

Cool! Thanks for that. That jump is exactly what I've been trying to do over and over and over and not succeeding at. It's the obvious best choice for a jump point. And trust me, I'm sprinting and have all movement-hindering bonecharms deactivated. But seeing that it can be done, I'll just have to go back and try some more.
A question just occurred to me: are all of my failed jumps (i.e. deaths) being counted on my stats page? If so, that'll be good for a laugh when I see it :)
P.S. Thanks very much for digging that video up for me. It never occurred to me to look for something that specific.
What I've learned is that I wasn't jumping properly. I was trying to jump while looking at my landing point, as you would in real life. What you need to do, in order to get maximum distance, is line yourself up a few feet from your jump point while looking at your landing point. Then look down and sprint, keeping your head down like that. That way you can better judge the last possible moment to take off. Once I did that, I made this jump easily, and the one after it (the one the guy in the video was having trouble with) on the first try.
And yes, the deaths are counted in my stats. I'm not telling you the number, 'cause when I actually saw it I didn't laugh :)
