Why did they use this engine?
I don't get it. The Cryengine and Unreal Engine 4 look significantly better, and run better.

Why use an inferior engine?

It's specifically designed to support Arkane's level design, atmosphere requirements, and gameplay needs. Allowing some of the crazy stuff you can do in game, and in the enviornment.

Do you want me to guess?
It's the engine Beteshda have been using in all games aside from skyrim and Fallout 4.
Remember Evil within, wolfenstein, Rage etc..
Yeah all IDTech 5, pretty sure they force their teams to use it instead of licence another one, the same reason EA is forcing Frostbite (but ye frostbite is awesome though).

Fortunaly Doom is using IDTech 6 and it seems so much better thanks to this new guy that is leading the engine, not carmack anymore, this new guy had a very important role on the cryengine, that is why he is making an excellent job now with IDTech 6, btw his name is Tiago Sousa.

Maybe this game is still using a modified version of IDTech 5 called Void engine cause IDTech 6 was not ready yet, Doom was some sort of pioneer for the engine, hopefully next games will only use IDTech 6, except for elder scrolls and Fallout that will probably continue to use the creation engine cause of the modding community.
Cheers

From what I can tell, ZeniMax is the parent company of Bethesda and they own id, so no licensing fees.
This is using a modified IDtech engine, many of the components were stripped out and replaced to fit the specific needs of this game. We don't know the specifics beyond that.

Exactly!
In other case Dishonored would probably just use Unreal 4, just like they used Unreal 3 on the first title.

It's pretty simple to understand, that is exactly what is happening.
I think most of the stuff won't be fixed regarding the performance, just like in other IDTech 5 titles.
Let's hope IDtech 6 will be used in all other games from now on.
