If you've ever played/finished the Thief series; Dishonored 2 really play like those games with "no powers". It's all in the timing and watching the patrols.
I am now on Mission 7; playing on Very hard; no powers; no detection; no kills and I've managed to knock every one unconcious every level.
Best tip: Patience. It can be done. :)
Almost everything (one bonecharm is inaccessable) can be reached without powers. Not having Agility makes climbing quite a challenge but, look for ways to make small jumps onto things from which you can jump to a higher spot, etc.
Patience and a little inginuity, Assbepis. With that, you'll do it.
BTW, which "huge open room filled with guards" are you talking about? Maybe we can help with that.
Lots and lots of quicksaves. :)
Another route that I found when doing this mission with no powers is to drop down into the water from the carraige station and swim all the way around the left side of the island. You'll eventually get to the dock where the watchtower is. Not the best way to go but, it can work.
But, remember ... just because you don't have powers doesn't mean you should give up on climbing. It may take more small jumps to get to where you want to go but, very often there are ways available.
Instead of trying avoid guards completely how about distracting them by throwing a bottle or shooting something away from where you want to be.
Another tip: Follow the thick red cables coming out of wall of light to get to the source of the power to turn it off.
Have fun.

I'm the only one in the house (we have 4 adults living in a 7 bedroom house, 3 of us are gamers) that uses headphones. It's annoying as hell when I'm trying to play this game with my headphones and the house owner's out in the living room 25 yards away playing whatever and I can't hear a thing. Because he's playing on a freaking 65" 5 speaker room monster of a tv at full blast.
Some games are better at 3-d sound though, than others. This one's good, weirdly Sniper Elite 3 and 4 *aren't* very good at it, and you'd think a game that relies on noise and hiding would be better for it.
Without specific mention of levels/rooms, I can't remember a part of the game where there wasn't a way around a problem on a no-powers run. Just completed one and every level has lots of paths around even without powers. I'd say keep an eye on your environment as much as possible. I love moving about in this game so I always like to find new ways around the levels, doing a no-powers run showed me how well the developers catered to the play style.
Also get creative! I got a shadow rating for the clockwork mansion (wasn't even noticed by Jindosh) on a no-powers run. My biggest hurdle was getting past a wall of light. I took a rather unethical approach and threw 5 people into the wall until it powered down. Seems those aristocrats in the waiting room were worth something!
Yeah, but those games are doable to play with subpar sound design by the simple fact they are third person, Dishonored would be impossible without good sound design given they are FPS, specially given how stingy they are with the lean distance.
Ah wow, everytime I talk about sound design and stealth I want to play Thief 2.
