Music in Dishonored
Let us take a moment to discuss the music in Dishonored, both of them, to honor the memory of Daniel Licht, who passed away on August 2. May he rest in peace.
However, it's certainly not necessary to limit the discussion to those songs which Licht composed, since many of those better-known songs were not made by him.

It's probably no surprise that when I first think of Dishonored music, Honor for All comes to my mind. The song is not at all my type otherwise, but in the right context, at the end of the first game, it touched me so deeply and still does. I think it also conveys regular civilians' feelings pretty well, considering how hopeless the situation in the city seems at that time.

I also love Brigmore Lullaby, especially in the actual game context. It's, well, beyond creepy. :)

Otherwise the troubadour songs in Dishonored 2 didn't please me all that much. I can understand that they wanted to have some contrast with a particularly rough male voice and a bright female one, but to me that contrast is a bit too big and it just goes against the grain with me.

When it comes to actual score pieces by Licht, they are brilliant. However, I have to admit I rarely remember score songs all that well from my playthroughs, yet occasionally I do pay attention to them if they add to the atmosphere particularly well. One of the particularly exciting tracks is Streets of Karnaca (Combat).

Do you people usually purchase soundtracks? I've bought both Dishonored soundtracks on iTunes, though they're an exception, I don't usually do that. But since these are my favourite games, I just couldn't resist. :)

I personally loved how each games' soundtracks reflected their actual place of location. Dunwall had a much darker and exquisite tone while Karnaca was much more traditional and spanish-y? Idk I'm not good with music.

I personally loved the troubadour songs. I enjoy the instrumentals of each song. I do agree the voice contrast can be a bit weird, but I liked it nonetheless. What I loved the most about those songs though is how much more character they give to the setting. Like I play the game over and over and it feels so alive. Seeing the people sing in the streets just gives the city much more life.

I listen to both soundtracks on Spotify, personally.

Rest in peace Dan... thanks for the brilliant soundtracks.

Will any of his works be in DotO?

I saw that news around 4 am this morning and was really saddened by it.

The music in D2 was far, far better than D1's, just overall for mood and location-style. But all of it was still very good.

I agree that the singers were a little wonky? But then again the music that is played by the 'musicians' in the Duke's palace is... really awful lol. There's more feeling to the singers and their folk songs and it made me think how they've described Serkonos as being where suggestive dances and spicy food comes from in the Empire :) They contrast with the stiff, stuffy type that might be heard in the northern isles.

Definitely hoping that his works were in DotO, there was no word about that in prior information I don't think? I hope so.

/Salute, wonderful composer and brilliant musician.

I like D1's music more than D2's because I feel like it complimented the overall atmosphere better...but then again I liked D1's atmosphere more anyway.

I'd have to say that "honor for all" is one of my favorite game-related tracks of all time.

I think I just read somewhere that Licht did make something for DotO, but I can no longer find my source so I may remember wrong. But, considering that his illness was discovered so late, it could be assumed he was working almost until the end of his life.

Well, that is true for sure. I liked the troubadour songs more when they appeared in the game, but the one during the end credits didn't feel as much like a reward as Honor for All. However, it was certainly refreshing to have some source music as well, and I cannot argue that those songs wouldn't have been good in their context.

True. Honor for All definitely made the ending to D1 feel way more badass

and how it blended with the music from the cutscene before it, I wish I could forget everything about Dishonored to just experience that again

Hah, I've had the same wish too! Still looking for a solution although Dishonored has been pretty enjoyable on the second, third, fourth and fifth run as well... ;)
