Does a white lightningbolt outlined in red mean I've 'failed' the ghost playthrough?
I'm trying to play my first playthrough of this game as a ghost. No killing, no being caught, nada. If I alert a guard with a thrown bottle, and their little 'lightning bolt' turns white with a red outline, is that 'failure' on my part, or do I still get to keep going?

Throwing bottles should be fine. It has to completely turn red and "shatter" for a NPC to detect you.

Pro tip: In case you are not sure, you can always check in the pause menu under "stats" :)

Ah! I just did, after throwing said bottle, and it still says 0 detections! Alright, this game got a -lot- easier just now... ffs. Thanks!

Oh! As a final question, what happens if a guard sees a body? Do they immediately 'detect' me? Or just go on alert, like when they hear a bottle?

No it does not detect you, and it acts also as if a bottle has been thrown. They just go into high alert looking for who killed the person (or knocked them out).
