Aim on their head to remove the sensors.
Furthermore, they need two takedown attacks from above, to be killed even without wasting any ammo.

bend time and you can assassinate them,
stun mine kills them with 2 charges,
can destroy the backplate, and then stab or shoot the whale oil canister,
can shoot off the arms, again aim for the whale oil things,
if you sneak up to one that's still inactive, you can plant a rewire tool on them

aaaand I'm sure I still missed a few ways.

im using emily. and thus far any dealings with them are loud and cost me a great deal of resources

Yup you did

You can acquire a master blueprint for your sword at mission 8.
It allows you to upgrade it to be able to deal damage to the clockwork soldiers stealth kill them from the sides.

Though it's only obtained at very end of the game, You get to keep it at New Game+

can throw a can of whale oil at them, loud but usually works.

upgrading your bullets to do the magnetize thing (can't remember the name) helps a lot too

I'm pretty sure I got at least one caught and destroyed in between the shifting rooms in clockwork mansion as well, they weren't too clever about where to stand

Im about to go into the mansion. I'm planning on avoiding them as much as possible but have:-

20x Pistol rounds
4x Grenades
5x Incendiary bolts

Unsure if the bolts would really have much effect as they're not technically explosive.

i found a neat trick. summon emily's clone behind them and they turn around allowing you to stab their weak spot. and if you have it upgrade for the clones to attack, it will just kill it on its own.

I just stand there holding block till they overheat then beat the snot out of them. Takes about 2 rotations to kill them. Never get hit though so works good.

Not knocking your method but that sounds super stupid in terms of mechanics. Can Corvo really just stand there on block? These things are massive with 4x 3 foot long blades...

Actually im playing emilly and yes you can just stand there holding block. Granted it takes alot longer to take them down but block does work. I recommended it for when low on ammo and what not. They will toss you around a bit though so you have to keep facing them dead on to block all damage. Soome will also do that electrified explosion thing so be ready to blink away.

Stack up a couple of Exacting Aim charms and one shot removes their head. Then you can just walk on by.

I do two quick attacks from above. It actually makes them too easy.

There's an upgrade you can get later on in the game that makes it a one drop assassination from a high enough point kill for them. It's only one drop to kill for me on the hardest difficulty setting.

Aim for the head. A pair of Crossbow Bolts can take the wood, then the sensor off, but a single Hardened Bolt to the head will take out both the wood and sensor, forcing it to rely on audio instead of visuals, making it very easy to sneak around. You can also take it out through a pair of drop assassinations, but you make it one with the Monkey Wrench upgrade for the sword.

A fully upgraded Stun Mine can also destroy it, and the Magnetized Bullets upgrade is excellent for stunning it in the middle of battle.

Removing all four of its arms causes it to break down, but if you break through its armor and hit the oil tank on its back, that's an instant kill.

Stun mine kills them instantly, NP.
