That's what the heart the outsider gave you wants you to believe anyway. I always bought into the notion that it lies to you most of the time. Slowly tries to convince you, subtly, that maybe these people deserve to die. It tries to remove the guilt and remorse you would normally feel with all that killing. Almost even encourages you to kill some of these people, with the abhorrent things it tells you about them.
The heart is the seed of corruption, insidious and unassuming. Don't fall for its tricks.
(Of course if you go full kill crazy it starts to question why you didn't spare as many as you could. But hey, its a theory. One I heard someone else discuss about the first game.)
You DO realize that the heart IS Jessamine's, and she IS held in it for you to be guided, right?
