Arkane Studios are a proper, caring game developement team like CD Projekt Red (Hope I said that right.), and they're trying to make a helping gift into buying the game, this is so people can find out if they have any issues with graphics performance, so what if we'll have to reinstall after the demo? Better than reinstalling the game and realised we can't refund it again since it took too long and was unplayable.
I myself am a HUGE Dishonored fan, and these rumours of PC graphics performance being terrible is what made me hesitant to buy even now, but thanks to the demo it's giving people a chance, in short terms, this secures the purchase from me which in turn is purchase money of consumers that goes to the studio.
Let's be honest, this isn't Uber Entertainment who fraud an entire fake game kickstarter to fund another game they kickstarted for which got way more than they needed, then put a paywall in front of the game they said was going to have purely free updates until it's an actual game.
I was completely expecting to be able to just buy the game and then go right back into to where I left off, maybe after a small download to unlock the rest of the game. No such luck. Now instead of playing the game all day I now have to wait all day for it to download.
Why were you even expecting that? I don't think that's ever been the case in the history of demos on steam. Certainly with AAA games. They'd be putting content out there that could be pirated with a simple crack.
Maybe in the old shareware days but never now.
On top of that, since my demo installation was deleted I expect I'm going to have to start over now.
No they explicitely stated you can carry on from your demo save games.
I saw that and although I really don't have a reason to doubt it my cynacism will believe it when I see it.

Yes, it is moronic. If you put out a demo to hopefully increase your sales it really is ass backwards thinking that it's sound design to make them download 20gb for the demo then turn around and make them download the entire 35gb of the game should they choose to purchase it.
Apparently that computer science degree you rely so heavily on isn't good enough for them to find a way around it. Something so many other developers have figured out already. This is purely bred either from laziness or a very short window for development. Either way it is an incredibly stupid method, especialy for those of us with crappy internet speeds.
So take whatever degree you feel like and shove it up your ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ignorant ass you stupid ♥♥♥♥.
I would have thought that a lot of the demo assets (graphics, level geometry, audio, etc) would be the same for the demo and the retail version, so I was hoping I might have maybe a 10gig DL to top off the demo with the rest of the assets and the executable for the full game.
Steam obviously knowns enough to remove the demo folder, so it would not seem unreasonable for that same procedure to have it just rename the folder and delete the incompatible assets and figure out what still needs to be downloaded.
Since the assets were not re-used, another option would have been to keep the demo as a separate entry in the steam library, so you could continue to play the demo while the full game downloads (but if people did not know that was happening, they might be upset about that much HD space being used).
I don't think I've ever seen it with a steam game, but there is also what Blizzard does where you DL the essential files and can start playing, and then it DLs the rest of the content in the background while you play.
Bottom line, I'm not shocked by it (yeah, its probably much easier to just compile a secondary build for the demo, and maybe the steam framework itself is the problem), but at least in theory they COULD have made the transition from demo to full a bit more pleasant if they had wanted to put a bit more effort into it, and I suspect most people that go from demo to full will find themselves at least a little annoyed that they have anotther 30Gig+ DL after already DLing a 20Gig demo.
