Intruders
Is it normal for intruders to always kill at least one colonist before being dealt with? Is dealing with them simply a matter of having sheer numbers of guards?

Number of Guards and additional weapons in weapons lockers. Your colonists will grab the additional weapons to help defend your base.

Also if you set your base up properly to where they have to enter or pass through security dome before reaching the main base helps with quick detection and response.

You can tell if they are intrudes before they even reach the airlock and shut it down, traping them outside. If you put the landing pad far enough away from the entrance.

I have lost only one colonist and one guard to intruders.

When do intruders normally start popping up? I've gone through several hours, have 100+ colonists, ZERO guards, ZERO guns, and the only deaths have been to meteor strikes.

They usually start showing up after your colony reaches "Standing".

I've been at Standing for quite a while in game. Suppose I need to get some guards and guns inside before anything happens. I thought maybe it was linked to allowing visitors in, which I haven't done yet.

How many guards do you recommend for 100+ colonists? My base is pretty large, and I've only got the one control room.

I usually go for about 15% (armed) and 20 extra guns in lockers.

Intruders show up on colonists ships and vister ships they will also always be purple in color, never trader ships or the emergency transmission ships. If you don't have the starpoint then its a low chance. Best method I've heard was to (EDIT) actually if done right you don't need any guards or even guns just to be vigilant each time a colonist ship arives or a vistor ship and if a purple colored people appear there just lock the nearest airlock and set ur base in yellow alert then just shut off all the air locks when they try to walk in them and wait them out(will eventually die from lack of oxygen (Easy Game)

Note: If you don't have multiple airlocks spaced out then you face the risk of one of ur colonists suffacating if he didnt make it inside quick enough. Thats whys it best to place landing pads and starpoints with a little walking distance to the nearest airlock.

My method is to have the airlocks nearest the landing pads lead straight to Control Centers which only have guards in. Then have Medbays,Dorms and Canteens nearby to handle the guards needs so they don't need to go to far from the airlocks.
I've got about 15 armed guards and they deal with any intruders easily, not lost anybody to attacks.

Ha ya yours takes less effort and risk just recently discovered the above trick but then a sandstorm happened and I almost lost some guys from trying to wait out intruders

I did not know that colonists picked up spare guns. I usually just went Imperial Guard on them and sounded the red alert. Sheer numbers always wins (You guys are outnumbered 200 odd to 6 or something ludicrous) but it often led to fatalities.

Now I can go Imperial Guard on them with actual guns!

Yup. I usually build a small security center close to where everyone works and place 2 weapons lockers in it. My primary security center is near Storage & Spaceport. I shut down airlocks so that the intruders have to come in through main security, if i let them in at all. With the Red Alert sounded it gives the colonists time to grab weapons and help out the guards. After the intruders are delt with the colonists return the weapons to the lockers.

eh I mostly sell my guns once my guards are armed worth decent amount of coin compared to my 100ish starch:) oh and does the amount of intruders go past 6? have normally 12 guards in my base.

I think if your playing a challenge it can because theres a option that allows you to add a flat amount to each "wave" of shuttles (1 or more). But in normal play? I don't think so.

This.

I have been doing this sort of layout, usually fronting Starports for some time now. It is very effective. Doing this, I have have no need for guard stations anywhere else in my base. The Security Sections near the above mentioned seteup are filled with Guard Stations and one or two Gun Lockers. One or two Security Stations far from 'the front' just for Radio and Telescope consoles.
