If you are selecting the non-default challenge and are still experiencing problems, then take it up with the challenge creator.

Traders work in this challenge, although the description of the landing site says that traders are disabled in this challenge.
But, in my opinion, it is more interesting to play in the original challenge where traders are really disabled.
Without traders, this challenge is really challenging and interesting.
With traders it becomes much easier.
For fun, I recently went back to retry that extra challenge with the dark moon challenge (suicide version of the challenge, not the one that gives all techs and allows trading). Managed to complete it in 42 days. \o/
Not quite up to your record, but I'm content with that number of days for multiple reasons. xD
