but it's still good RPG and I prefer Risen 3 more than Risen 1 despite Risen 1 is better RPG.
and actually, if Risen 3's subquest or main quest is better, it can be better than Gothic 2(without expension) because it's quest design isn't far from Gothic 1 and 2.
Elaborate on why the heck you think it is not a good rpg? I'ts awesome if you ask me. I have been playing for a month now and I'm still finding it a challenge, I still don't have amazing equipment, and I like the pace it's going. What's the problem? All you seem to care about is the storyline - Something which I barely even pay attention to in modern videogames.
PC is cursed and will turn into undead so he have to find a way to solve it!
it's good plot!
I mostly care about quest.
basically, as I said, quest design of Risen 3 isn't far from Gothic 1 and 2.
but for subquests, they are too much simplified.
that's the problem. but still, it's far much better than skyrim though.
Of course you're right on side quests aspect. Unfortunately all of them - besides the cursed tomes quests and maybe the farm legacy quest (but this boils down to killing few goblins as well... But at least you can decide who will inherit the farm afterwards) - are the matter of go there and kill X creatures and eventually grab me an item Y. Some of them are not even a real quests, since they pop out when you pick an item. Then you get "give auri culci to a gnom Z!" who stands right next to you. That's not even a quest, it's a lazy shovelware just to mess up your quest log.
I mean, even if they had something better coming up, what could be branched into a neat sub-plot, they decide to butcher it down into a typical kill X creatures and receive a reward right now: the quest with disappearing fishermen on Taranis is the prime example of that. Instead of suplementing something more - I mean, the survivor is screaming about a mysterious monster that lurks at nights - we get another kill some shadows and receive a reward... Almost every one side quest (most of the main quests as well) copies a simple pattern almost non-existant in G2: kill X monsters, come back for a reward (sometimes with a bonus counter of collecting Y items), eventually click there to destroy a portal.
The main quest would be all right if not two problems 1) it's not existing in a vacuum, it's called R 3 (three) and it messes up everything that was presented up to this point in the series; and the ending is non-existant tbh 2) it has few massive fallacies with the biggest one: Nekroloth being a master of cunning, basically controling us on an every step we do up to the capturing the mages, in his infinite wisdom decides to not take them with him to his fortress we cannot possibly enter (until we free the mages of course!) and just for our convenience locks them up in characteristic places under "protections" of trash mobs he saw us mowing down in thousands (literally). You could add the fact that Crow makes absolutely no sense and it seems that Nekroloth wanted us to find and kill him, giving Crow a map to Skull Island. The "traitor at Taranis" is just a comedy material. And so on and so on - the "realm of the dead", which is again just an excuse to give us a "go there and kill X, dig out Y" quest. The sole concept is not bad, it's the execution which screams "we're lazy and don't know how to really write" is the main problem.
think about how many quests can be solved before the game let you know the quest is actually tied with main quest at Gothic 1 and 2.
after joining faction, all good part of quests are end at Gothic 1 and 2.
but at Risen 3, even after joining faction, quests are continued.
at least Risen 3 did well on this: helping around can help you solve main quest
only problem is too much simplified quests.
and there is no Xardas who directly let you know what to do unlike Gothic 1 and 2.
But I wouldn't necessary agree with "after choosing a faction good quests end" in G2. The paladin murder investigation in Khorinis is pretty neat and tied with the main quest. Same with NotR quests, where there's almost no killing n fetching: all I can think of are: killing rats for meat with Jack, killing bandits at the tower and clearing the ancient guilds' buildings.
after that, nothing is great.
at Gothic 1, Sleeper's temple is great enough to cover absent of quest but at G2, nothing can cover absent of decent quest..
and for NotR, I rather consider it seperated from original game.
NotR itself can be one of my best RPG.
but sadly, it's just an expension and short.
I might add that the escort quest would be impossible in R3, where all NPCs are simply immortal unless game decides they need to die by your hand. The image of gnome being mauled down by some wild animals who simply fell unconcious and stood up after a while like nothing happened won't leave my memory. A shame.
and I think it was Bilgot.
Real problem of escorting quest is, there is not time limit or other things to make player fail.
and failure don't affect much.
in short, there is no failure.
same for Gothics and other Risens.
There is one meaningful escort at Gothic 2: escorting Diego.
but.. it's annoying as hell.
but I think Gothic3's escorting is good
because:
1. you can fail
all NPCs can be killed
2. failure affects.
if you fail to escort water mage, then you can't do more quest about them.
I hear you about the NPC's being immortal, but honestly, there are very few modern games of this style that give you NPC's who actually die. At this rate we can call any rpg that has immortal NPC's bad - When that is really not the case.
immortal NPCs are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stupid and lazy design.
Risens, Gothic 1 and 2 are not much different, they are lazy design.
That's another reason why I think Gothic 3 is the best RPG among Gothics.
it reminds me of New vegas but better.
