"Can't find correct context in gfx-system"
When I double-click the desktop icon, I get the Risen logo overlaid on my desktop, then a black window appears in the top-left of the screen before a large error window appears with a title "Severe error found".

The details in the window:

engine FATAL ERROR:

Module: eCApplication::CreateEngine - can't find correct context in gfx-system
Filename:<c:\Project\platform\pc\source\Engine\admin\ge_application.cpp>, Line:#1609

I'm on 1920x1080 widescreen. I've read some help on the game forum (http://forum.deepsilver.com/forum/showthread.php/43716-Engine-FATAL-ERROR) but there's no resolution settings in my ConfigUser.xml to change.

======

Oh. I fixed it.

I went into C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Risen\data\ini\ConfigDefault.xml, and in the <Window> tag I set Bottom and Right to my resolution (Bottom="1080", Right="1920", FullScreen="true") and this has solved it. The main menu loads fine, and I've started playing the game no issues.

Just open the .xml file in Notepad - you can edit it and then save it.

I know this topic is old but i never had this problem with Risen until now.
When i try to boot the game it seems to start up , then it shows a black screen , and then i get the FETAL ERROR '1609'.

I tried multiple websites with solutions including this topic , but nothing that i try seems to work.
I used to play the game fine , but i am currently am using a different screen then i normally did.
But that cannot be the problem , let me note under here what i tried to no prevail.

- I tried un-installing the game , remove all files [including saves] that remains , remove the whole map and re-install the game. [Didn't fix it].

- I tried adjusting the screen resolution to multiple screen settings [1280x720 , 800x600 , etc[
none of them worked obviously so i tried setting it to my current screen resolution [1366x768] , but sadly didn't work either.

- I tried un-installing pshyixs drivers and re-downloaded those mentioned as 'FIX' didn't work either.

- I also checked if @ steam , my Risen game didn't had any files missing , Steam said everything was there except for 1 file [which is normal if it's freshly installed] , This obviously didn't fix it either.

- I tried deleting the whole .ini file and replace it with a fresh one [Didn't solve this].

- I even downloaded fixes & patches for Risen , but they make the game in-accessabel 'due to wrong CD key , or incorrect CD key code [While it's in my Steam liberary].

I am @ a total loss now , since i want to play this game badly for my YouTube Channel.
I need it to work to be able to play/upload all 3 paths in Risen.
So if anyone knows 'The Fix' that actually works , let me know.
I am also willing to try out other methods to do this without the need to download anything like demon tools , etc [Because ♥♥♥ that ♥♥♥♥ haha].

If anyone can help me , please help :)

I followed the steps that burnsflipper laid out. Along with that I changed the refeshrate to my monitor's refesh, added Test8="1920x1080xWindow" to the Resolutions section, and in GUI section I changed the following values in the Aspect16x9: VirtalWidth="1920", VirtalHeight="1080". As an added precaution I deleted the ConfigUser.xml, updated my drivers and rebooted and that has let me play the game so far

IF STILL NOT WORKING, as mine did.
here is some added info for assistance.

Make sure the ConfigUser files refresh rate is identical to the systems refresh rate.
C:\Users\PC\AppData\Local\Risen

Open ConfigUser.XML
---------------------------------------------------------------------
<options>
<Engine>
<Render

BLAH
BLAH
BLAH

finally...

<Window
AdapterNumber="0"
Bottom="1440"
Left="0"
RefreshRate="60" <<<<<<<This Little Fella<<<<<<<
Right="2560"
Top="0"
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Following everything seen above should result in your game working. as mine did. Theoretically.
Thank you Burnsflipper + Sandy Bear for your assistance!

Thank you so much that actually did it for me since the refresh rate was set to "0" from the start.
