Risen

The Risen FIX! Won't Launch, Fatal Error, SDK Issue.
Alright everyone I have the FIX! I posted here a few days ago asking for help and didn't get any, so I went digging and found the answer!
First, I'm running Windows 7 64 bit, and RISEN is NOT supported under Windows 7.
When I tried to launch Risen I would get the Risen image and then a screen would come up saying I had a FATAL error with the PhysX SDK. After fixing that, the game just wouldn't launch at all. So here's the FIX for both the PhysX and Windows compatibility Issues.

:pinkteam: 1. Fully Uninstall your PhysX software, use a reg cleaner, and then reboot.

:pinkteam: 2. Go here and download the latest PhysX software and install it. http://www.nvidia.com/object/physx-9.13.1220-driver.html

:pinkteam: 3. Now install RISEN. Once installed do a game file verification. There is almost always 1 file it didn't install when you first installed it that it needs.

:pinkteam: 4.Now, go to your STEAM folder, SteamApps, Common, and open RISEN folder, then click on the BIN folder. Find the actuall Risen.exe file (NOT THE SHORT CUT ON YOUR DESKTOP) and right click and select, "Troubleshoot Compatibility" use the suggest settings, and RUN the game. It should launch just fine. Now close the game, and SAVE the settings for compatibility.

:ss13ok: 5. Thank Me.

:imachamp: 6. Enjoy the game!

It didn't work for me. I can load the game now but I get the blue screen of death whenever I click either continue, settings, quit... The game worked just fine last month when I tried it for a couple hours, now I completed another game and want to play Risen but I can't.

I did every steps except the "reg cleaner" part, can you please explain if it's important and what it is?

The reg cleaner removes all parts of any old drivers files etc. It's important. Might not be what's causing your BSOD but it's worth a try. I'd try CCLEANER it's free and works good.

Thank you, but it still didn't work after repeating all steps and using CCleaner. I find it really strange because the game worked perfectly fine less than a month ago. Could it be a recent Windows update that caused this problem? I didn't change anything in my Windows 7, same antivirus, same Nvidia card, etc...

One strange thing I notice is that no matter how many times I run the file integrity verification, I'm always missing one file. Steam then downloads a 2.2k file and if I immediatly run the file verification again the same thing happens again and again, always missing this 2.2k file.

Did you try uninstallig and reinstalling and then verifying the game? Just taking a guess.
Are you on Windows 7 or 8?

Oh yes, 5 or 6 times since yesterday! I have Windows 7 64 bits.

However, even though I used to play without changing compatilibilty mode and had no issue, when doing the steps above "troubleshoot compatibility" said to use Win XP service pack 2. But after randomly trying different things (run as administrator, disable this, disable that), it worked when simply using Win XP sevice pack 3 compatibility mode. It seems to work now, the game loads fast instead of taking 2 minutes before I reach the introduction screen and being BSOD'ed whenever I click something. I could start a new game and walk around on the beach... let's hope it will last! :)

I don't understand what it going on, but thank you Spizy Chicken for your prompt replies.

I did these things and it didn't fix anything. Launching from the .exe gives me another error concerning Windows Visual C++, which I update and still get the same error message.

Thank you very much for the fix, I've recently encountered this problem and the way with physx worked just fine.

I've W7.
