Just open the freakin lock, already !

I have lvl 3 lockpick, 47 lockpicks & a treasure chest. I keep getting the message that I need to pick the lock or get the key, wth! Why won't he just pick the darn lock?

If you have lockpicking maxed out and can't open a chest or door, it means that this particular lock can't be forced open. You'll have to actually get the key. Fortunately, there aren't many un-pickable locks in the game (most of them are in the town, if I recall correctly).

ty for ur reply. I am wondering if the chests that I dug up & cannot pick r part of a quest, my character keeps saying he needs to pick the lock or get a key. Maybe they r Steelbeard's chests

They are Steelbeards chests. Sometimes Open Lock scrolls will open what you can't lockpick!

I have used the unlock spell on a Steelbeards chest before and it didn't open it.

Not entirely sure as I havent got that far, but Patty will give the quest for them and then you should be able to open them. Have to progress where she is outside on the beach and Romenoff man tells you to go talk to her and do what she says. Should be in Chapter two.
