Can't buy armor?
I've finally gotten into the game as a result of the game receiving gamepad support, I find it to be quite charming although a bit sluggish and pretty difficult. Either way, I have 1300 coins, I can definitely buy the workers' clothes from Hawkins but I'm pretty sure I remember getting prompted to buy hunter's clothes from Don Esteban for 2000 gold and I don't get that prompt anymore.

Also, any tips for getting more money? I've been looting and keeping the items quite sparingly, I don't want to use magic that much, at least not rely on it, so anything magic or manarelated has gotten sold but I've kept mostly anything else. And what skills are worth getting? Lockpicking has already paid for itself, but gutting animals, sneaking, what's worth it?

The Don won't sell you the hunter's clothes until you officially join the bandits. That doesn't happen until you complete all quests in both the bandit camp and in Harbour Town in favor of the Don.

You can get the sneaking skill for free by going behind the guard house in Harbour Town and digging up a treasure chest that contains a Ring of Stealth. You can wear the ring to give yourself the sneak skill, and take it off when you are done thieving.

Gut animals is not worth it in my opinion. I actually did a calculation on this years ago; gut animals only earns a maximum of around 3000 gold over the entire game (that is assuming you kill and gut nearly every animal on the island), and most of that is obtained during chapters three and four when you don't really need gold any more.

If you get the sneak skill ring and use it to thoroughly loot Harbour Town and the monastery, that should give you enough gold to buy whatever skills and equipment you need.

You're welcome. You did not ask about smithing, but in my opinion smithing is worth it if you intend to focus on sword fighting. You can make yourself some very nice swords with the smithing skill, and you can also sell the swords for extra gold.

However I do not usually bother with smithing if I am using any other weapon besides swords.
