Right now, all you're doing is the RPG equivalent of free-lance work. What decides your faction allegiance is your actions in Harbor Town. Until you go there, and fulfill the requirements for joining either faction, you're a free agent.
Yes, you can complete the "Conquest of the Artifact Camp" quest, kill all of the Order members there and still join the Order and become a mage.
The only thing it changes is a little bit of dialogue when you talk to Severin for the first time. If you haven't killed the leader of the artifact camp, he asks you to visit them and get an update on their situation. If you have killed them, he laments the fact that they are dead, and says that he suspects the Don's men were responsible. You get more XP and gold for killing them, so that is usually what I do.
As I didn't want to kill anyone, I cannot confirm anything but that is my asumption.
You can most certainly both Fincher's quests and Severin's quests, as long as you do Severin's quest first. Doing FIncher's quest first renders Severin's quest impossible to complete, for obvious reasons if you've done them.
It's safe to assume that right now, you're just a freelancer looking for a permanent position, as that's pretty much the truth. The events in Harbor Town are what determine what side you end up joining. The way it works is that there's a number of quests that can be done for either the Don, or the Order. Which way you choose to do any of those quests marks up one point for the side associated with that method, and once you get four marks on either side, that's the side you've chosen to join. In order to become a Mage, you need to do finish four of those quests in the Order's favor, as well as do two specific quests for Master Belschwur of the Mages BEFORE joining the Order. Once you have those six quests under your belt, go to the Commandant in charge of Harbor Town, tell him that you want to join the Order, and ask him about becoming a mage. He'll tell you what you need to do.
1) If you have joined the Order, then Severin will give you the quest to visit the leader of the artifact camp (if you have not already killed him). Once you have joined the Order, you cannot get any more quests from the bandits.
2) If you have joined the Don, then Severin will not give you the quest to visit the artifact camp, since you are already allied with the bandits.
3) If you have not joined either the Order or the Don, then when you approach Severin he will attack you and and knock you out. You then wake up inside the monastery and automatically join the Order. Again, once you have joined the Order you cannot get any more quests from the bandits.
Yeah, you're right. Upon further reflection, I have no idea what I meant.
