You don't even have to install it, just extract the downloaded .rar file using your favorite archiver program (eg. WinRar, 7-zip, total commander, whatever...) and you will get this file:
Custom_Font_Inst.exe
Now go to the "C:\Windows\Fonts", where you will see A LOT of font files (if you are using classic Windows Explorer and you are on Vista/7/8/10 (or newer at the time you are reading this), you will probably see these files in groups - in that case just twice click on them and you will see specific version files for that font (regular, italic, bold, etc.). Every one can be used for Risen, so for example if you want to have italic font in-game, copy italic version of that font you want to use.
I personally recommend to go with the Calibri > "Calibri Bold" font, which is the default font (in regular version of course) for Microsoft Office program such Word, Outlook or PowerPoint for presentations. It's simple, it's bold, it's nicely readable.
Since Calibri Bold in default uses weight of the font at least 600 units, it should be definitely thick enough to read on 4K displays - although I can only presume that, since I personally I am using "only" 1080p@15,6" display, but it's great for me.
So simply select some font file, press Control+C combination to copy it to the clipboard, then navigate to folder where you donwloaded the Risen font changer, paste the font there (press Control+V together), then run the program, select that font file you wish to use (the font you just copied) and press "Install into game". That's it - you should be presented with dialog saying something like "font is already installed", that means that the font was successfully installed into the game. Just quit the font changer program and run Risen.
Enjoy.
The thing with 4K, though, is how small the text gets. It gets TINY. Same with Gothic 3 in 4K, which I imagine both are in the same engine made by PB.
Is there a way to not only sharpen the text but increase the size of it? There is a huge difference from 1080p to 4K. The text gets almost 4 times or 2 times smaller.
Maybe cause I'm sitting 2 feet away from my monitor?
Right, it's the items and enemies here, too. But it's so small I end up missing items and can't read what they are. Wanted to do a YouTube series for the game but not like that, so I was hoping the items and enemy/NPC text could be made bigger.
Old topic but I'm having the same issue (playing at 4K on a 24 inch screen) and while I haven't found a way to increase the font size, I just installed the font "Unispace Bold", which is naturally large and readable. It's still not ideal in terms of size but it's much better than the original
Also in case someone doesn't know, you can force MSAA+SGSSAA on the game, and the combination of it with high resolution has better results than just the resolution or just the AA alone, so if you are using supersampling like DLDSR only go up to 4K to avoid making the font even smaller and then spend all the GPU headroom left on higher MSAA and SGSSAA levels. This way you get both the quality and the readable font.
