I would also like to know if there any plans to unlock this?
I know exactly what you mean, and I know that I would not be able to play like that either.
It has nothing to do with the usage of a controller, everything is bind on a single joystick there too.
It takes some getting used to, but after playing for a while I am understanding why they are like this. You point your mouse 360 around the character but the retical is confined to a radius which is also the range of your weapons/hook and the confusing part and the camera does not move much, so you are not always in the center.
This means you get the sensation of your cursor being moved for you after doing quick hook jumps.
If you are familiar with controls in Nuclear Throne, there the cursor also moves with the player but so does the camera and you stay in the center, which means your cursor stays in the same relative space on the screen until you move it.
Here the camera is fixed (most of the time) so you do a quick jump or two and feel like your cursor is somewhere else mioved for you and can be hard to follow at first. On the other hand if your cursor did not travel with the character you would need lightning fast reflexes to hook one point after another because Flinthook moves FAAAAAAST so you need your cursor pointed in the same direction as you fly to continue grabbing things.
One could argue that the slowing time mechanic could mitigate the need mentioned above.
You'll get used to the controls but having a choice would have been nice. I would imagine making this possible would involve a whole level design revision for the devs to confirm a free mouse cursor doesn't mean you get stuck in some place that needs fast hooks to get through.
Well it doesn't sound that bad, i might even try it to check if i can get used to its controls, but yeah would've been nice if devs added an alternative.
Unlocking the mouse made it impossible to zip around a level quickly, as you would need to do large, uncomfortable movements to follow the hero on the screen - I know it sounds a bit weird as it is unconventional, but trust us, it wasn't feeling good at all! The way we did it takes just a little bit to get used to, I hope you will enjoy it :)
Thanks for your comments! <3
I am right on the cusp of purchase, but locking my cursor around my character seems like something I am going to incredibly frustrated by. I'd prefer the opportunity to learn for myself which control scheme does me best. I actually like whipping my mouse around so clutch quick-hooking could be its own form of enjoyment.
Brigador had the same exact issue when it launched. its a topdown isometric game, but rather than having straitforward WASD controls, it has tank controls, which is godawfully frustrating no matter the practical benefit. The devs spoke verses upon verses regarding how this control scheme was the best way to play the game and wouldn't consider providing other options. This attitude withheld to the point where very few people even play the game, and now they went back on their word and implemented the exact control scheme they personally said wasn't the "preferred" way to play the game.
I am all for you guys doing you, but maybe you'd do us the honor of letting us try to do us? I'd prefer to figure it out myself that mousing around to hook isn't feasible, rather than being forced into a control scheme I am immedietely uncomfortable with.
while Enter The Gungeon is super controller-oriented, if you're playing with a controller the crosshair is stuck within a radius around your character, but if you decide to play with a mouse and keyboard, the crosshair has no restrictive movement.
I would super appreciate the consideration of a toggle to allow me to figure out for myself how right you guys are <3 <3
It's just unnecessary and causes a lot of people frustration by not including it, just because it isn't the most optimal solution.
EDIT: Also, there are a lot of people who do quick, uncomfortable mouse movements in a lot of games. CSGO, Osu, Enter the Gungeon, to name a few. It even exists in a lot of the genres. I am aware that this game is likely one of the more extreme cases, but if that's what people want, it shouldn't be disregarded bluntly.
It's all up to you guys in the end though, just some thoughts.
That's right. We tested with unlocked cursor and it made the game impossible to play in the later stages that move really fast. We won't put the ability to unlock the cursor because of this. The locked cursor is quite comfortable and ideal for this gameplay according to what we tested. If you're used to other games with unlocked cursors, it might take a little while to get used to, but I hope you'll end up enjoying it!
I just can't believe this, as someone who plays games like Osu. Hard? Sure. Impossible? No way.
