the game is to mark a 20 year gap from the original, because the game is almost 20 years old. next year, RWS will release a 20th Anniversary Box Set, just like they did for Postal X (10th Anniversary). As far as story to the game goes, it may or may not mark a significance - the real "story" behind the game is still being unravled by the community.

Because POSTAL Redux is a celebration of the upcoming 20 year anniversary of the first Postal. 1997 + 20 = 2017

Because it simply is illogical...
In this forum, many people don't like this change:

Redux should not change the plot of original version but it can add something new.
I suggest: Add Diary/War Journal for Special Delivery and restore the original dates in next update. Then I would be happy :)

But Redux takes place in 2017. The original takes play in 1997. How does that not make sense?

The ending is pretty clear. It shows that there are 2 postal dudes. The one from the first game was the father of the one from the second game.
