Modo indie

Modo indie

The Limitations of the Indie Version
Hi there and merry Christmas!

I am realy interested in the Modo/Mari Bundle - it seems to be an awesome deal, but it is still a lot of money so I want to be sure before I hit "Buy".

I am a hobby Modeler and started to learn 3Ds Max 2012 some months ago, so I am still a greenhorn. What I´ve read so far about Modo sounds realy promising (a fast and efficient Workflow, Sculpting right in the Modeling Application) - fast and easy to learn are the main selling points for me and having a more current Package sounds good to me.

But I am not realy sure about the Limitations - yes, there is a list but for me as a Newbie it is hard to evaluate if those Limitations will or won´t apply to me and I don´t think that I will be able to judge that with the Trial version in the remaining days of the sale.

- The Polygon Limits, Export and Image Formats aren´t a problem for me and I won´t be needing Network Rendering.
- Not being able to share the project Files won´t be a problem in the short term since I am not planning to work on larger projects

But I am not realy sure about those two points:
- Python editor, third-party scripts, and third-party plugins unavailable
- Command, scripts, and command history panel results unavailable except “undo” and “history”

As I have no knowledge of Modo - can someone who is using Modo enlighten me if I as a Noob and purely Hobby Modeler would be missing those features? Does Modo function well without Plugins or are there essential Plugins?

And finaly a legal question:
If I read it right I am allowed to - for example - sell my models in the Unity Asset store, but I am not allowed to build models for my employer to use in a commercial project - for that I would have to upgrade to Full Modo (or use Max) - am I correct?

Thanks in advance and Happy Holidays!

Hey Count_Crushmore -

So I have been using a Modo on and off for a while now.

All I can say is take the dive. I am a former max user myself - I have used allot of 3D modeling application (Maya, 3DS, Blender, etc.) Modo is a pure joy to work with just for the modeling tools, Mesh Fusion, and the UV editor.

Any way your concerns -

> Python editor, third-party scripts, and third-party plugins unavailable
> Command, scripts, and command history panel results unavailable except “undo” and “history”

This just means that you cannot use plugins. However there was a survey done a while back to see what plugins should be added to modo Indie either as paid add-ons or included with the base package. From my limited understanding at least.

Currently people want plugins to extend the functionality of Modo Indie at least from what I have seen. So that might change soon.

I cannot comment on the legal thing since I do not know much about it.

I'd also say go for it. Modo is very nice, even without the plugins. I think you can even share files now, as they are not locked anymore to the steam account.
Pretty sure you can use it to sell models on the unity asset store.

Well, you pulled the trigger before I saw this post. Modo updates to a new version about once a year, so if you want the latest IMO the subscription is the better deal. Six months on sale is only about $45. Anyway it's what I'm gonna do here in a few days (have the full demo right now).

Hi Nickelfloor.

Thank you for the input - You are right, that is something I should have thought about, but call me old fashioned but I like to own Software instead of renting it. Sure, there are good sides like the updates you mention, but I think it will be some time until I reach the Limits inside Modo and need the next version and when that day comes I can still decide to go for a subscription plan.

Happy Holidays.

The biggest limitation for me is the poly export.
Meshfusion is extremely polygon heavy. Most models produced from meshfusion are not so useful. Modo doesn't have autoretopo so you need to export out these 100k plus meshes and run them through 3dcoat or zbush.. But you can't with the limitation so I don't use meshfusion at all.
