Failed to start game (unknown error)
I'm trying to run the Redux version on Windows 10 through parallels on my macbook pro with 32 GB of RAM and an excellent processor and graphics. When I try to start the game it just says "Failed to start game (unknown error)" with a link to something on steam that troubleshoots a missing executable file which this isn't. Someone please help me out.

Hi there,

could you specify what is that missing .exe file?

It doesn't say there is a missing .exe file. On the error message I get that says "failed to start game (unknown error)" there is this link
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=8676-EFLX-7453&l=english&steamid=76561198058644002&errortype=EAppUpdateError&errorvalue=1

The link is to help trouble shoot a missing .exe file, but the error message itself doesn't say anything other than "Failed to start game (unknown error)"

Did you try to verify the game files and deleting the 'appcache' folder? Also, are you able to play any other Steam games?

Yes, I deleted the apache folder and no difference. I can play any other steam games just fine

Does the original version of the game work for you?

Have you tried verifying the local game files? You'll find it by right-clicking the game in your Library, selecting Properties, then click the Local Files tab.
Finally, hit the VERIFY INTEGRITY OF GAME CACHE button. That'll check all essential files and, where necessary, re-download missing/corrupted files.
The original version does work. verified integrity of game cache and still have the same issues
Hi there,
I also got problems with starting Ethan Carter Redux. Download was completed without problems, the loading grafic goes until the very end, then it stops and a window opens with various codes that I cant understand in my lack of IT-knowledge, just "fatal error!" I understand ;)

Here are some of the codes:
{0x0000002200000021} + 0 bytes
amd_agsx64.dll {0x000007fef7bd1a86} + 0 bytes
EthanCarter-Win64-Shipping.exe {0x0000000140e5326a} + 0 bytes

with this code it goes on with different numbers about 20 lines,
and then at the end,

kernel32.dll {0x000000000772a5a4d} + 0 bytes
ntdll.dll {0x000000000773db831} + 0 bytes
ntdll.dll {0x000000000773db831} + 0 bytes

thats it.

When I open the Redux Version, I got the options: Play Ethan Carter Redux or Launch with default settings in secured modus (german :abgesicherter Modus...)
Each option does the same, like described above.

I have a notebook with Windows 7, 64 Bit, Intel (R) Core(TM) i5 CPU M 450 @ 2.40GHz, RAM is 4 GB, grafic card is ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650, the driver is the updated version.

Other Steam games like f.e. Skyrim V - The elder scrolls with updates run fine.
Also Ethan Carter the first version runs fine. In installation a few months ago i had to turn off the antialiasing so that it was running.

Can give me directions? That would be so great!!
Thanks!

Please try to run the game from the file AstronautsGame-Win64-Shipping.exe instead of from Steam and let us know if it helped.

Hi jagga,

Redux requires at least 6 GB of RAM.

From there it says this app can't run on your PC, to find a version for your pc, check with the software developer

Did you try changing the settings as suggested in the link provided?

Yeah I figured it out. I was running windows 32 bit on parallels which wasn't making use of the 16mb of ram allocated for parallels. After doing a clean install with windows 10 64 bit it's running perfect. Thanks for the effort and timely response.

That's great to hear, you are welcome. Enjoy the game! :)
