Frequently asked questions for Steam version
Why release on Steam?
Releasing ShareX on Steam will allow us to earn a lot more users. If you worked on one project for last 8 years then generally as a developer you will want more people to use your software. So Steam is a good way to advertise and expand our userbase. Also having a lot more people using ShareX allows us to receive a lot more user feedback on how we can make the ShareX experience better.

What are the main differences of desktop build versus the Steam build?
Currently only difference is updating mechanism. Rest is same as the desktop version.

Is ShareX going to show "In-app" in Steam?
Nobody would want to see such thing when software supposed to run always in tray; therefore by default ShareX will not show ‘In-app’. After the first time running the application, ShareX will ask if you would like to enable the ‘In-App’ status. Also you can later change it from "Application settings -> Integration tab".

Note: Steam will show "In-app" momentarily when ShareX is opening because it is impossible to run without showing "In-app" when launching from Steam. Also it is important because it is not possible to write review in Steam without having 5 minutes of usage. So that little time showing "In-app" in start will allow people to write review eventually.

Is ShareX able to start on startup like in the desktop version?
Yes it can.

Can I open ShareX when Steam is not open?
Yes you can open it without Steam needing to be opened. Even if you have enabled the "In-app" option ShareX will check if Steam is open and if it is not ShareX will open like normal and won't try to start Steam.

How are settings going to work compared to desktop version?
It’s going to work exactly the same. Even ShareX is going to use the same folder "Documents/ShareX" by default. So if you move from desktop to Steam version or vice versa then it will continue to work without problems.

Why is ShareX on Steam a larger size?
Main reason is .NET Framework 4.0 is included in the download. All games/softwares in Steam will include it if a game/software requires the .NET Framework.

Another reason is we decided to include FFmpeg in Steam build so you don't need to download it separately but downloading FFmpeg was requiring more than 30 MB in the desktop version but it is around 22 MB in Steam so actually you’re saving bandwidth. Also all these are just one time downloads and in updates they will not be redownloaded, unless we decide FFmpeg requires updating for example if it has an important bug or performance improvement. This is still good for you because in this case FFmpeg will be automatically updated in background.

How does the update system work?
Normally Steam will download when you are not in an application. This made updating ShareX more complicated than usual applications. We made ShareX_Launcher.exe which is responsible for the handling of updating. It works similar to how Chrome works with its updates. Steam will download updates to an "Updates" folder and when you launch ShareX which will run the launcher, the launcher will check if the Updates folder has a new update. If there are new updates found it will copy them to the "ShareX" folder and run it. So Steam can download updates even while ShareX is running and when you next start ShareX it will update. So all these will happen silently without affecting users, same as Chrome.
