You misunderstand me, perhaps deliberately. I'm not saying they should port Half-Life 2 or Half-Life Alyx or whatever models. What I'm saying is that it's a good thing that they're promising to repurpose their current avatar system to appear more tolerable, assuming they go through with it. Hopefully they go for an approach more similar to their existing game, Rust.
Additionally, I'm not given the impression that the "citizens" were an unfinished, placeholder, or otherwise "beta" asset. I do believe they were intended to stay mostly the same for the final release, though community outcry has been large enough that they seem to be reconsidering that approach. Even if they were, a beta must evolve into a finished product piece-by-piece, and I think the removal of the "citizens", even in this early beta state, is progress towards a more complete and enjoyable release.
And since we're never going to get Garry's Mod 2 in that case.
