Yeah, no. This is entirely misinformation. Source games don't load simple addons from the sourcemods folder, that's just where larger mods that need to use the SDK (and usually mount content from other games) get intalled. Instead, for small addons like model swaps, you'd set up a custom folder.
Extracting the GMA and getting the model to load is a start, but you'll need to figure out how to recompile the model on Alyx's animations, which are different from the player/citizen animations that your model was probably originally intended for. Not sure how you'd go about that, unfortunately.
